Explore Wezembeek-Oppem through two distinct travel interests: architectural and local history, and nature. Kasteel De Grunne and Sint-Pieterskerk highlight different historical periods. At Warandepark, a small nature reserve and a special rule for fishing are of interest; the Kraainem and Wezembeek walk runs through the valleys of the Kleine Maalbeek and the Wezembeek.
Architectural and local history
A chapel was built on the grounds of Kasteel De Grunne in 1474; a beguinage was founded there in 1487. The Kasteel De Grunne complex includes a chapel that was inaugurated at Christmas in 1901 and is still in use.
Sint-Pieterskerk has its own architectural history: it was probably a chapel at first, before being converted into a church in the 13th century. Its high choir was built in the 15th century in the Brabantine High Gothic style. The church also has a protected organ dating from 1793. The early origins therefore remain explicitly probable, while the high choir and organ offer concrete points of reference for its architecture and furnishings.
In chronological terms, the religious history stretches from the 13th century to the chapel’s inauguration in 1901; the two dates associated with the grounds of Kasteel De Grunne are only 13 years apart.
The De Kam brewery is also part of local history. From 1890 until the end of the 1960s, it produced only Kriek and Geuze. This clearly defined period of production adds to the religious and architectural themes. A comparison of local history over time reveals a difference: the construction, foundation or furnishing of religious sites are individual events, whereas De Kam’s brewing history covers the production of Kriek and Geuze from 1890 until the end of the 1960s. Here, the dates refer to an activity that continued over time, not a single event.
Nature at Warandepark and along the route
A nature conservation association manages a small nature reserve at Warandepark. The same park has a pond, where fishing is reserved exclusively for members of the municipality of Wezembeek-Oppem’s recognized fishing club. If fishing is one of your travel interests, membership is therefore an essential requirement.
The Kraainem and Wezembeek walk runs through the valleys of the Kleine Maalbeek and the Wezembeek. It offers a distinct nature-focused option for anyone who would rather put a scenic route ahead of historic buildings. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Choose your travel focus
When choosing a travel focus, consider how you want to explore: the historical information can be read chronologically, while the walk offers a specific perspective on the landscape.
