In Haasrode, specific buildings and route descriptions offer different starting points for planning a trip. The Neo-Gothic church ensemble, houses from earlier centuries and walks with named destinations provide a range of focuses. Those interested in local history will find precise architectural details; those who prefer exploring on foot can follow the described routes and their destinations.

Building History in Haasrode

The Parochiekerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw and the Pastorie form a cohesive Neo-Gothic ensemble. It was built in 1894–1895 to a design by Leuven architect Pieter Langerock. Since 15 February 2005, the ensemble has been designated as a protected town or village landscape. Its construction period, architectural style and protected status are therefore clearly specified.

The Dorpshuis marks a different period: it dates from the second half of the 18th century and has one storey. Sandstone surrounds frame the segmental-arched windows; the doorway also has a sandstone surround. The buildings described therefore display features of different periods and specific architectural details, without reducing them to a single style.

Another historic farmstead is the Hoeve in Haasrode. It dates from the 17th to 18th centuries and includes a single-storey brick residence built in the traditional brick-and-sandstone style. The complex also includes a converted barn, which retains wall decorations and an oculus in the gable. For an architectural-history focus, the church, Dorpshuis and Hoeve each offer their own building forms and periods.

Walking Routes with Named Destinations

The Brembergweg route leads to the Bremberg and the “trou d’Haesrode,” the “gat van Haasrode,” in Mollendaalbos. Its description thus names specific destinations. The route “Herfstwandeling - Oud-Heverlee (Haasrode) - Recreatieve wandelroute” is presented differently: it starts and ends at the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk on Milsestraat in Haasrode. The two descriptions address different planning questions—one names destinations in Mollendaalbos, while the other specifies its starting and ending point. Check the availability of the Herfstwandeling route before your trip.

The Pootefretters tour is also part of local history: a municipal project featuring heritage plaques introduced it in Haasrode in 2023. If you plan to take this tour, check how it is currently presented on site.

Walks in Heverleebos and Meerdaalwoud

There are further historically themed points of interest for walks in the Heverleebos and Meerdaalwoud forests. The Dreven van Heverleebos en Meerdaalwoud is an approximately 75-kilometre network of avenues and paths in the forests, which cover around 2,500 hectares. It was laid out between 1727 and 1770 as an extension to the palace gardens of the Duke of Arenberg. Its approximate length and date of creation give the network a different scale from the individual buildings in Haasrode.

A municipal brochure with a map guides walkers to more than 30 historically interpreted sites in Heverleebos and Meerdaalwoud. It focuses on individual stops within the forest areas, while the Dreven refers to an extensive network of avenues and paths. These offer two different ways to explore: a map featuring many interpreted sites, or a historic network of paths whose scale and period of creation are themselves part of the story.

To choose a focus, you can first consider whether you would like to explore Haasrode’s architectural history or follow a route description with a specific destination or named starting and ending point. The brochure offers another way to discover the historically interpreted sites in the two forest areas.
