Wemmel brings together several historical perspectives: Kasteel van Wemmel with its park and central pond, a protected parsonage, an old watermill, and traces of agricultural and hospitality history. There is also a walk dedicated to Laermans and Speelbos De Motte. This mix helps you appreciate Wemmel for more than a single landmark: architectural history, hiking and nature each offer a different focus for your stay.
Castle Park and Protected Buildings
Today’s Kasteel van Wemmel dates from 1649 and has been a protected monument since 13 August 1953. The castle’s date and its protected status mark different aspects of its history. The grounds include a park with a large pond at its centre. The historic building and a landscaped part of the castle grounds are thus directly connected.
The parsonage of the Sint-Servatius parish tells a different architectural story. It was built in 1700 on behalf of Grimbergen Norbertine Abbey to replace an older parsonage. The garden wall and chapel are also protected monuments. Unlike the castle, the focus here is on the religious connection and the abbey’s commission. The new building replaced an older parsonage, so the history of the parish house goes back further than 1700.
Mill, Farmstead and Inn
The Amelgem or Elverikmolen watermill has a history dating back to the 13th century. Ronkelhof also shifts the focus from representative and religious buildings to agriculture: it is Wemmel’s last historic tenant farm. The mill and farmstead thus add two different types of buildings to the local history. They show that Wemmel’s historical themes are not limited to the castle and parsonage.
The Banbrouwerij-herberg De Kam connects brewing and hospitality with the history of Wemmel’s lords: it was a ban brewery and inn owned by them. Beneath the courtroom, the cellar served as a prison; it still contains rings to which prisoners were shackled. This detail adds the history of justice and imprisonment to the story of the building. De Kam thus combines its past as an inn with traces of lordship and the legal system.
Hiking and Nature in Wemmel
The Laermanswandeling is dedicated to Laermans and passes various places in the municipality. These include the protected town hall, the Beverbos nature reserve, and the centuries-old farms of Klein Amelgem and Groot Amelgem. The walk thus brings together a protected building, a nature reserve and historic farms as distinct themes.
At Speelbos De Motte, children can let off steam in a green play paradise. At the same time, the forest is a habitat for a rare grasshopper species. Play and nature come together here. This is a different focus from the Laermanswandeling, which connects various buildings and landscapes: at Speelbos, the emphasis is on a single forest, a place for children to play, and its role as a habitat for the grasshopper.
