Discover Mont-Saint-Guibert through the varied traces of its history and landscape, from churches and medieval towers to paths along the Orne. If you are considering the town as a travel destination, you might first ask yourself whether architectural history or an outdoor activity should play a greater part in your stay.

Churches, Towers and Architectural History

The Sainte-Gertrude Church was built in 1776 and restored in 1844. The setting of the Église Saint-Guibert is just as distinctive as the building itself: it stands on a rocky outcrop bordered by the Orne. It is surrounded by a former fortified cemetery, which has not been used since the 20th century. Here, you will encounter two different ways of exploring local history: the construction and restoration dates of one church, and the distinctive setting and former function of the other church’s surroundings.

The Donjon Tour d’Alvaux, also known as the Tour de Sarrasins, is a defensive tower dating from the late 12th century, near the Orne. It was classified as a historic monument in 1989. The tower is currently located on a campsite. If you are considering a visit, check in advance whether access is possible.

The Donjon de Bierbais is another place where it is worth distinguishing the original structure from its present appearance: its original section dates from the 12th or 13th century, while the keep has been extensively altered and today has more of a Neo-Medieval appearance. The Château de Bierbais is a different building: it is an 18th-century residential building in the Neoclassical style, classified as a monument. The Promenade de la Grande Chaussée passes by the château, giving you a way to see the building without assuming that an interior visit is possible.

Les Orangeries de Bierbais represent another chapter in architectural and garden history. They are associated with the remains of a park and greenhouse complex that was once internationally renowned and pioneering in the field of botany. One of its monumental greenhouse projects dates from 1828 and was signed by landscape architect Ch. H. Petersen. The Brasserie Grade offers another glimpse of the past: it was the only one of Mont-Saint-Guibert’s former breweries to remain in operation for a long time, but it has since disappeared.

The Orne Landscape and Walking Routes

Mont-Saint-Guibert’s landscape is shaped by deep valleys and extensive plateaus. Two circular routes offer different highlights: Au fil de l’Orne à Mont-Saint-Guibert follows paths along the Orne, while the Promenade de la Grande Chaussée passes by the Château de Bierbais. When planning your outing, you can choose whether you would rather use the river or a historic building as your point of reference.

The Totemus treasure hunt in Mont-Saint-Guibert is 4.5 kilometres long and follows in the footsteps of former combatants. Free parking is available at the starting point. Some sections may be muddy or slippery in wet weather—a practical consideration when planning your day and choosing your footwear.

The Moulin Al Poudre is also located along the Orne and is a watermill. Since 1972, it has housed a centre for receptions and cultural events. Alongside the medieval and Neoclassical buildings, it illustrates another aspect of local history: the use of a historic building as a cultural venue.

Leisure Facilities in the Villages

The municipality offers freely accessible playgrounds and sports facilities in the three villages of Mont-Saint-Guibert, Corbais and Hévillers. The playground locations it lists are Rue des Écoles, Rue des Hayeffes 27/a and Rue du Cerisier. These municipal leisure facilities complement the cultural attractions and walking routes if you would also like to consider places for sport or play alongside historic buildings and walks.
