Linter offers everything from a protected medieval monument and milling technology to the landscapes of the Getevallei. In Orsmaal-Gussenhoven, significant above-ground remains of a small medieval water castle have been preserved. The Geensmolen represents a different kind of cultural history, while the Avonturenpad Getevallei puts the valley’s biological diversity in the spotlight. For your stay, you can choose between architectural and technological history and nature-related themes.

Water Castle and Milling Technology

In the district of Orsmaal-Gussenhoven, Hof ten Steen is a protected monument. Significant above-ground remains of the small medieval water castle have been preserved. For travellers interested in architectural and local history, Hof ten Steen is a clearly defined point of interest: its protected status is linked to a specific medieval building type and its surviving remains.

The Geensmolen offers a different perspective. It is a complete watermill with a core dating from the early 18th century; its features include a sluice system and an oil-pressing room. Five pairs of millstones make it an exceptional example of a particularly powerful mill. This distinguishes the mill from Hof ten Steen in terms of technological history: here, the focus is on its construction and power, while Hof ten Steen is notable as a medieval water castle.

The Geensmolen’s location adds another dimension: it stands at the confluence of the Vliet and the Grote Gete. Its connection to water is evident both in the type of mill and in its location where two rivers meet.

Landscapes and Trails in the Getevallei

The Getevallei landscape in Linter includes wet swamp forests, open pastures, orchards and nature areas such as Doysbroek. The Avonturenpad Getevallei invites visitors to discover the biological diversity of the Grote Getevallei. Those who would rather focus on the landscape as a whole than on individual buildings will find a distinctly different emphasis here.

One notable landmark on the Avonturenpad is the Golden Geet suspension bridge. It crosses the Gete and leads to the Getedraak. A named river crossing and a specific destination are therefore among the features of this trail, whose theme is also the biological diversity of the valley.

De Houten Reus also offers its own connection to nature: the observation tower is 10 metres high and stands beside a pond with great crested newts. Here, the tower and pond are the specific points of interest; by contrast, the Avonturenpad focuses on the biological diversity of the valley.

The IJzerenweg adds another historical perspective. It follows a former railway line on which a cycle path was built. The line was part of the Tienen–Diest–Mol railway, which opened in 1878. The IJzerenweg can therefore be understood as a link between the area’s former railway history and the later use of the line as a cycle path.
