Lorüns lies at an altitude of 583 m at the entrance to the Montafon tourism region. The village is situated between the Räthikon and Verwall mountain ranges; Gavalina and Davenna are also named as mountain ranges. Here, a striking mountain landscape meets a settlement history dating back to the Middle Ages.
Landscape and recreation
The Prazalanz alluvial fan is a natural cultural landscape with a rich variety of flora. Various forest biotopes are also among Lorüns' landscape features. A municipal bulletin from August 2022 described the meadow landscape on Prazalanz as a frequently used local recreation area. The flora characterizes Prazalanz as a natural area; its mention as a recreation area adds a perspective on how it was used in 2022.
The Ill in the village's history
The flatland in the narrow valley at the entrance to Montafon was settled as early as the Middle Ages, despite the earlier risk of flooding from the Ill. Around 1500, Lorüns had a chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk because the Ill posed a danger to the village. In these two historical contexts, the river played different roles: as a threat to the settled flatland and as the reason for the chapel's dedication.
Church, construction and glasswork
The parish church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Lorüns was built between 1956 and 1960 to plans by architect Otto Linder. It was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Bruno Wechner on June 7, 1964. The church's artistic features include several distinct types of glasswork: the glass mosaic windows were installed in 1963 and 1964 and were created by painter Hubert Berchtold. Concrete glass windows are located on the south wall and beneath the gallery; they were made by W. Derix in Rottweil. The Catholic parish church is listed as an immovable monument in a Federal Monuments Authority conservation order for the Bludenz district. For the mosaics, the artist and installation dates are specified; for the concrete glass windows, their location in the church and the company that made them are given instead.
Cycling tour and trails
One specific cycling option is the route from Lorüns to Partenen. It can be ridden on city, trekking or e-bikes. The starting point is not far from Lorüns railway station. The destination, available bike types and directions for finding the start are the practical planning details for this route.
Municipal bulletins from August 2022 describe the “Diebschlössle” hiking trail, which branches off in Lorüns from the right bank of the Ill riverside path at the former “Alte Stroß.” The Ill embankment path is named as part of the regional “Illweg”; according to the notice, holiday visitors used it. Check current signs and trail conditions before setting out. The cycling route to Partenen and the hiking trails offer different points of reference: a destination and choice of bicycle for the former, and specific directions and current conditions for the latter.
