The approximately 76.5 m-high Reinberg on the southern bank of the Traun, opposite Wels, and the contemporary art at the Angerlehner Museum reveal two different sides of Thalheim bei Wels. Historic churches add architectural history, spanning from the 11th to the late 15th century, to the landscape and art themes. Depending on your interests, you can make trails, art or sacred architecture the focus of your trip.
Reinberg and trails
Reinberg is a ridge about 76.5 m high on the southern bank of the Traun, opposite the city of Wels. The trails on Reinberg were established in 1902 by the Wels Beautification Association. Geology also shapes the area: an upper layer of clay lies over a permeable layer of gravel and an impermeable marl deposit. This structure brings springs to the surface on the slope or at the foot of Reinberg. If you are interested in the landscape as well as the trails, you can see a clear connection here between rock layers and springs.
Running and cycling routes
There are different route options to choose from when planning an active trip. The Audi run is an 11.0 km running route with 135 m of elevation gain. The ECM cycling route “Voralpenblick” is 23.2 km long. This makes it easy to compare the running route and cycling route by their stated lengths; the elevation gain is also provided for the Audi run. The Traun Cycle Route R4 is also highlighted as a top attraction in Thalheim bei Wels. Conditions on this cycle route may change; check them before setting out.
Art and local history
The Angerlehner Museum in Thalheim bei Wels is one of Austria’s largest private museums for contemporary art. Its collection includes more than 2,500 works in this genre. The museum offers art education throughout the year, as well as individual one-hour guided tours for groups of up to 25 people. If you are planning a group visit, the stated tour duration gives you a concrete time slot to factor into your plans.
Three churches bring different periods in sacred architectural history to life. Thalheim Parish Church was consecrated in 1070 by Bishop Altmann of Passau in honour of Saint Stephen. It took on its Late Gothic form in the mid-15th century, which it has largely retained to this day. St. Ägydi Church, dedicated to Saint Giles, was opened for worship on 11 April 1189. Its Gothic design has been preserved in its original form. The Late Gothic pilgrimage church of Maria Schauersberg was consecrated in 1490. At the parish church, the year of consecration and the creation of its Late Gothic form are several centuries apart.
Another historical landmark is the Hof zu Thalheim, later known as Traunegg Castle: the first record of the estate dates to 1283.
