Holzhausen combines local history with a stage of the Wels-Land Circuit. The parish church, rectory and bakehouse give the village centre several historical points of interest. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the sights in the village and the regional circular route: this lets you focus your stay on church and architectural history, or add a section of the circuit.
Parish church and rectory
The Roman Catholic parish church in Holzhausen is dedicated to St Vitus. According to the Federal Monuments Office’s monument register dated 23 June 2026, the Roman Catholic parish church in Holzhausen and its cemetery, as well as the rectory complex with its outbuilding, bakehouse and garden wall, are protected monuments. This protection therefore also covers the components of the rectory, not just the church building. The sixth stage of the Wels-Land Circuit passes through the village centre to the parish church and its Baroque rectory. This connects the specific history of the village with a named stop on the regional route.
Layers of local history
Holzhausen was already settled in the Neolithic period. Church records attest to a stone church; the first parish priest mentioned in a document is recorded from 1385. This date refers to the priest, not to a construction date for the parish church. The parish church also underwent a general renovation. A different specific construction date applies to the old bakehouse on the village square: it was built between 1820 and 1833. Local history spans from settlement in the Neolithic period to the construction of the old bakehouse on the village square between 1820 and 1833. More than four centuries separate the first parish priest mentioned in a document in 1385 from the construction of the bakehouse between 1820 and 1833.
The Wels-Land Circuit and local connections
The Wels-Land Circuit is a circular route of around 160 kilometres that connects 24 municipalities in the Wels-Land district with the city of Wels. The sixth stage runs from Buchkirchen to Marchtrenk, passing through the village centre of Holzhausen to the parish church and its Baroque rectory. The 160 kilometres refer to the entire circuit; the stage is the specific section that passes through Holzhausen. Another local connection is the walking and cycling path between Lehen and the village centre. It enables safe walking and cycling between the two points and opened in September 2024. The circuit connects the region, while the walking and cycling path links two specific parts of Holzhausen.
