When choosing a stay in Fischlham, cultural interests and mobility can be considered separately. The parish church offers specific points of interest in art history, from its Late Gothic structure to individual works with known dates. There is also a concert program covering classical music, jazz and traditional folk music. For getting around, the OĂ–VV bus route 501 and the Salzkammergut Shuttle Service offer different options.

Church Architecture and Works of Art

Fischlham Parish Church is essentially a Late Gothic church. One rare feature is its choir termination, which is formed by half an octagon. This describes the shape at the end of the choir: the termination follows the sides of half an octagon rather than a straight line. The Late Gothic character describes the building as a whole, while the half-octagonal choir termination is a specific architectural form. If you are interested in church architecture, these are two distinct ways of looking at the same building.

The oldest work of art in the parish church is a seated figure of Saint Peter dating from around 1390. It is made of terracotta; only the arms are wooden. The approximate date provides a chronological reference point, while the difference in materials highlights a detail of its construction. The work can therefore be understood both through its depiction and its materials.

The Fishermen’s Pulpit was installed in 1759 and depicts the words of Luke, “At your word I will let down the nets,” from the Gospel of Luke (Lk 5:5). The quotation focuses on casting the nets. Together with the year it was installed, the Bible verse offers another way to understand this work of art: it points to the subject depicted on the pulpit.

Another historical detail concerns the branch church of St. Georgen in the Schauertal valley. During its renovation in 1995, a former side altar from Fischlham Parish Church, dating from 1715, was installed as the high altar. The dates refer to different stages: 1715 is the year of the former side altar, while 1995 is the year of the renovation and its installation as the high altar. This is therefore an example of an older altar being put to a later use in another church.

Concerts and When to Travel

The Schloss Bernau Cultural Association organizes concerts ranging from classical music and jazz to traditional folk music. If you would like to include a concert in your stay, check the event dates before travelling. This lets you plan your stay around a specific event rather than assume that the music program is available at any time.

Bus Route and Local Shuttle

OÖVV bus route 501 runs along the route Wels – Fischlham – Steinerkirchen – Eberstalzell – Spieldorf – Vorchdorf. The sequence lists the places along the route and can help you work out how this bus option fits into your onward journey or trip to Fischlham. Check the timetable for the specific journey.

In Fischlham, the Salzkammergut Shuttle Service offers a local micro public transport service for hikes and excursions to places with connections to rail and bus routes. Its function differs from that of route 501: the bus route lists a sequence of stops, while the shuttle is a local mobility option for hikes and excursions with rail and bus connections. When planning a trip, you can take these different purposes into account separately when choosing how to get around.
