There are different ways to plan a trip to Bachmanning: hiking on Krailberg, cycling along the Haager Lies, or exploring cultural history at the chapel, memorial plaque and French Cross. These themes do not form a ready-made single route; rather, they appeal to different interests. When planning, consider whether exercise, sacred art or local remembrance is the deciding factor for you. The differences between the summit trails, the cycle route and the cultural landmarks can help you make this choice.

Hiking on Krailberg

Krailberg is the highest peak in the Wels-Land district. Its summit connects the municipalities of Bachmanning, Pennewang and Neukirchen bei Lambach, making it a landmark that spans municipal boundaries. The Krailberg Hiking Arena opened in 2015 and comprises four signposted trails to the summit. All the trails therefore lead to the same destination; check the details locally before your trip when choosing a specific route. If a summit hike is your main focus, Krailberg and its four trails offer a clearly defined option to plan around.

Cycling and walking along the Haager Lies

The Haager Lies offers a different kind of outdoor activity. The cycling and walking path is about 22 kilometres long and follows a former railway line from Haag am Hausruck to Neukirchen bei Lambach. Because of its gentle gradient, the route is accessible by bicycle and is suitable, for example, for beginners using a handbike or e-bike. This makes it different in character from the four Krailberg trails, which lead to the summit: the Haager Lies focuses on a longer route between two places and on cycling. You can weigh up the two options according to the kind of trip you want.

Remembrance, chapel and art

A memorial plaque has been located at the municipal office since June 2011. In connection with the former Bachmanning subcamp of the concentration camp, it names the Sinti extended family Rosenfels-Jungwirth, resistance fighter Alois Steiner, and Paul and Wladimir, children of forced labourers from Poland and Ukraine. The plaque thus highlights different life stories and specific names.

The cemetery chapel in Bachmanning was consecrated as a Marian chapel on 15 April 2018. The altar painting Immaculate Conception was painted by Erich Spöcker. For anyone interested in sacred art, the Marian dedication, the painting’s title and the artist provide a clear thematic focus.

The so-called French Cross stands at the foot of Krailberg. Its name probably derives from retreat battles between the Austrian and French armies in 1800 and 1805. The origin of the name remains uncertain; however, it connects the site with a specific historical interpretation.

The dates refer to different things: 1800 and 1805 mark the battles thought to lie behind the name French Cross, June 2011 is when the memorial plaque was installed, and 15 April 2018 is when the Marian chapel was consecrated. This distinction helps separate a presumed origin of a name from the specific dates of a memorial plaque and a chapel consecration.
