A stay in Aistersheim can be planned around striking architectural history and trails through the forested municipal area. The moated castle and parish church are cultural highlights; walks and a cycling route offer another way to spend time here. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether to focus on historic architecture or to make outdoor activities a bigger part of your stay. Aistersheim is two kilometres from the Innkreis motorway—a practical point of reference for planning your trip.
Moated Castle and Local History
The moated castle is a well-preserved square complex dating from the second half of the 16th century. Massive round towers stand at the corners; the complex is entirely surrounded by water and lies at the edge of the Hausruck Forest. Its location at the edge of the Hausruck Forest places the castle within the landscape, while the water surrounding it entirely describes its setting. The founding of the moated castle around 1150 is attributed to the Minnesinger Dietmar von Aist. From 1156 until the acquisition of the Innviertel under the Peace of Teschen in 1779, Aistersheim served as a border fortification. Its history therefore does not fall within a single founding year: the attribution to around 1150, its border role from 1156 to 1779 and the construction of the castle in the 16th century belong to different historical periods. Various events and markets are held every year in the moated castle and its arcaded courtyard.
Church and Cultural History
The parish church was built around 1700 as a unified Baroque hall church incorporating an earlier Gothic church. The high altar was created in 1744 by master carpenter Gregor Derschl from Aistersheim. Above the tabernacle is the 15th-century group of figures “Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child,” depicting Saint Anne, Mary and the Christ Child. The church thus combines an earlier Gothic building layer with a unified Baroque structure; works of art from the 15th and 18th centuries add distinct points in time. South of the church, the charnel house stands in the cemetery and is protected as a historic monument by ordinance. In the mid-1870s, the Weibern music association became the Weibern-Aistersheim music association. This history of the association complements the architectural testimony to the past with a connection to local musical culture.
Walks, Cycling and Leisure
The hilly, heavily forested municipal area offers opportunities for walks throughout the entire area; cyclists in Aistersheim can use the Hausruck-Mostlandl cycling route. The activities therefore differ in scope: walking opportunities cover the municipal area as a whole, while cycling is linked to a specific route. The play and leisure area offers modern equipment and comfortable places to relax for all ages, adding another way to spend leisure time alongside the trails.
