In Stroheim, the views from Mayrhoferberg, a named hiking route and an annual pilgrimage offer different focal points for planning your trip. The observation tower combines a precise elevation with panoramic views across several landscapes. Landerl Chapel is both a viewpoint in its own right and the destination of the procession on Ascension Day. So landscape, walking time and religious tradition each offer a different reason to stay in Stroheim.
Views across several landscapes
Mayrhoferberg is the highest elevation in the Eferding district. At 655 m above sea level stands the 9 m-high observation tower. From there, the panoramic view extends to the Salzkammergut Alps and the Mühlviertel. In föhn conditions and with good visibility, you can see around 130 places from the tower. This figure depends on the stated visibility conditions—so the weather matters if you are particularly interested in the distant views.
The Garden of Secrets offers a different view: from its 20,000 m² garden, the vista stretches across the Eferding Basin and deep into the mountains. While the view from the tower reaches to the Salzkammergut Alps and the Mühlviertel, the garden’s vista spans from the basin into the mountains. The two perspectives therefore highlight different aspects of the landscape.
Hiking trail and annual pilgrimage
For a hike through Stroheim, the circular trail “In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors” is one named option. It is about 8 km long, with a walking time of approximately 2 hours. These approximate figures give you a guide to the distance and time needed when planning your day. The hike and the pilgrimage answer different planning questions: the route and approximate walking time matter for the hike, while the pilgrimage is tied to an annual date on a holiday afternoon.
Landerl Chapel lies 2 km southeast of Stroheim town centre and offers a magnificent view of the Eferding Basin. Its location and views are a reason in themselves to include it when exploring Stroheim; it is also the destination of the annual main pilgrimage.
The procession takes place on the afternoon of the Feast of the Ascension, travelling from Stroheim parish church to Landerl Chapel. The local brass band accompanies the procession, during which people sing and pray; a May devotion is held at the chapel. If you are interested in this religious tradition, the afternoon of Ascension Day is the key time to keep in mind when planning your visit.
Church history and a garden break
The parish church and Landerl Chapel also differ in when they were built. Stroheim Church was built around 1235 by Count Johann I of Schaunberg. Landerl Chapel was built much later, between 1901 and 1904. The village is therefore home to two religious buildings from clearly different periods: the church dating to around 1235 and the chapel from the early 20th century.
The Garden of Secrets combines sweeping views across the Eferding Basin and deep into the mountains with a small café and a terrace. Coffee and homemade pastries are served there. If you plan to take a break at the café, it is best to check whether it is currently open before your trip.
