In Hintertux, there are a range of experiences to choose from when planning your visit: a guided show cave tour, glacier destinations and hiking trails with a suspension bridge, tunnel, waterfall and stream. When deciding, it helps to consider what kind of visit you have in mind: a guided tour, a glacier visit or a trail with its own route? The time details also refer to different things; tour duration and walking time are not the same.
Glacier destinations and guided tours
The Hintertux Glacier cable car runs from Hintertux in three sections up to an altitude of 3,250 metres. Luis' Glacier Flea Park is located at the mountain station of Glacier Bus III on the Hintertux Glacier, at 3,250 metres. The entrance to Nature's Ice Palace is a three- to four-minute walk from the mountain station of Glacier Bus 3. Guided tours of Nature's Ice Palace take you into a glacier crevasse with icicles, glittering ice crystals, frozen waterfalls and a glacial lake. At the glacier, you can choose between the park at the mountain station and a guided exploration of the glacier crevasse at Nature's Ice Palace.
The guided show cave tour of Spannagel Cave lasts about an hour and takes place year-round; the schedule may change seasonally. The Hintertux Glacier also offers a snow experience every day of the year, although operating conditions may vary. Before your visit, check the current cave tour times or glacier conditions. Allow about an hour for the guided show cave tour of Spannagel Cave; the walk from the mountain station of Glacier Bus 3 to the entrance of Nature's Ice Palace takes three to four minutes.
Trails with different routes
The Tuxbach Adventure Trail with TUX Worlds crosses a suspension bridge, passes through a tunnel and continues to Hintertux. The Schraubenfälle Waterfall Trail passes the Kesselfall, climbs to the natural monument “Schraubenfälle” and crosses a narrow bridge to the valley basin at Waldeben. The “Life at the Foot of the Glacier” circular trail descends to the centre of Hintertux and follows the Tuxbach back to the starting point.
If you are specifically looking for a circular hike, “Life at the Foot of the Glacier” is the clear choice: the trail descends to the centre of town and returns to the starting point along the Tuxbach. The other two routes list Hintertux and the valley basin at Waldeben as destinations. This lets you take your preferred route into account: a loop, distinctive crossings with a bridge and tunnel, or a route featuring a waterfall and natural monument.
The water features also offer different experiences: the frozen waterfalls are part of Nature's Ice Palace in the glacier crevasse; the Kesselfall is on the Schraubenfälle Waterfall Trail. So if water and ice influence your choice, these names point to different destinations.
