Steep and rising terrain, small hamlets and old farmhouses characterize Gerlosberg. There are several options for a hike: the Kreuzwiesenalm hiking trail from Hundsbichlhof to the alpine pasture, the easy Schmankerlweg No. 11 through forests and alpine meadows, or the carved Way of the Cross to Maria Opferung. There are also seasonal activities and a local history dating back to the former Schwaighöfe (alpine farmsteads).
Landscape and History
Today’s farms and hamlets originated from former Schwaighöfe, which were systematically established by various landowners from the 12th century onward. Gerlosberg was first mentioned in a document in 1237 under the name “Gerlaisperch.” These two details mark different historical points of reference: the Schwaighöfe reflect the development of settlement, while 1237 marks the first documentary mention of the name “Gerlaisperch.” The Schwaighöfe reflect the development of settlement, while 1237 marks the first documentary mention under the name “Gerlaisperch.” It flows through a deeply cut gorge toward the Ziller.
Hiking and Seasonal Activities
In summer, extensive hikes across Gerlosberg’s lush alpine meadows are possible from Rosenalm, with views into the Zillertal valley. In winter, skiers use the alpine pastures adjoining Gerlosberg as part of the “Zillertal Arena.” The seasonal options are clear: hikes across alpine meadows are mentioned for summer, and skiing on the adjoining alpine pastures for winter.

The Kreuzwiesenalm hiking trail starts at Hundsbichlhof in Gerlosberg and ends at Kreuzwiesenalm. Parking is available at Hundsbichlhof; as parking regulations may change, check the latest information before setting out. Way of the Cross and Local Attractions
The carved Way of the Cross leads from Klammegg to the small Gerlosberg church of “Maria Opferung.” The “Maria Opferung” schoolhouse chapel is considered a local attraction in Gerlosberg. In 2009, an ornate wrought-iron grille featuring a painted flaming heart was installed there, allowing the chapel to be entered during the day. Old farmhouses are also among the local attractions. The Way of the Cross, chapel and farmhouses offer different ways to discover Gerlosberg’s religious and farming heritage.
