Buchen combines sweeping mountain views with a farming heritage and a variety of hiking trails. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these themes separately: culture, landscape and outdoor activity each offer a different focus. The routes also vary in their starting points, direction and duration—from a snowshoe hike to a three-day tour. This lets you decide before you plan whether you are most interested in the landscape, history or a longer tour.
Mountain Views and Evening Atmosphere
From Buchen, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Hohe Munde, the Wetterstein Mountains, the Mieming Range and the Stubai Alps. A sunset in the hamlet of Buchen is considered a memorable experience. Together, these offer two distinct landscape highlights: far-reaching views across four named mountain regions and the evening atmosphere in the hamlet. If you factor nature and views into your travel plans, these landscape features are another way to appreciate Buchen.
Farming Heritage and Early Landscape History
The Mountain Farmers’ Museum in Buchen offers insights into the lives of farmers in the past and displays around 70 collectibles from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Ropferhof probably dates back to the 13th or 14th century. At Katzenloch, botanists analysed pollen thousands of years old and discovered so-called indicator plants, which point to woodland pastures in this area as early as the Early Neolithic. The pollen analysis adds an early perspective on land use to the history of the farm and the collection. The timeline therefore stretches from evidence of the Early Neolithic, through the Ropferhof, which probably dates back to the 13th or 14th century, to the collection items from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Snowshoe Hike and Trails to Telfs
The S4 snowshoe hike to the Rauthhütte starts at the Ropferstub’m in Buchen. It first follows Trail No. 24 to Katzenloch and then climbs to the Rauthhütte along Trail No. 99. The start, intermediate point and destination give the route a clear course.
The Buchener Steig takes a different direction: from the Rauthhütte, it descends to Buchen at 1,193 m; from there, a hiking trail leads down through the Kochental valley to Telfs in the direction of Birkenberg. The three-day tour “Die Runde um die Munde” (The Loop Around the Munde), by contrast, runs from Buchen through the Kochental valley towards Telfs and Birkenberg. The difference in scope can help you choose: the Buchener Steig focuses on the descent from the hut, while “Die Runde um die Munde” is a multi-day tour starting in Buchen. Check the latest route details before planning this three-day tour.
Wildmoos and Getting There
In the wider region, the Wildmoos Nature Reserve offers another way to experience the natural landscape. It lies on a sunny plateau between Mösern, Seefeld and Leutasch, and offers shady forests, impressive views, rich flora and fauna, and varied hikes throughout the year.
Regional bus route 431 connects Telfs, Buchen and the Leutasch Spirit Gorge. If you plan to use this service, check the current timetable for your travel date.
