A moor lake at around 1,200 metres, a raised bog and cross-country ski trails of varying lengths give the Teichalm a clear identity as an outdoor destination. The Teichalm is the centre of the municipality of Fladnitz an der Teichalm. Teichalmsee is a moor lake in the Almenland Nature Park at an elevation of around 1,200 metres. When planning your visit, the main consideration is whether you would like to include short walks by the lake, a longer route, or selected cultural and activity offerings.
Moor lake, moor trail and paths by the water
At Teichalmsee, you can choose between two routes of similar length that differ in their surface and character. The gravel path around the lake is about 1 kilometre long, accessible and suitable for pushchairs. The Teichalm Moor Educational Trail is also about 1 kilometre long: this accessible wooden boardwalk leads through one of Austria’s last mountain pine bogs and is free to walk from April to October. Signs explain the animal and plant species found in the bog. So, the lakeside route stands out for its gravel surface, while the moor trail takes you through the bog and offers information about its natural environment.
You can take pedal-boat rides on Teichalmsee; availability may vary by season. Right by the lake, there is also the “green energy park for families”, where children and families can enjoy an interactive discovery tour exploring renewable energy. The two offerings provide different experiences: a ride on the water or an exploration of renewable energy.
Compare cross-country ski trails and hikes
The cross-country ski trails differ considerably in length and route. The Sommeralm Trail runs from Teichalmsee to HoldahĂĽtt'n and back, and is 16 kilometres long in total. The Hochmoor Trail is a 5-kilometre loop around Teichalmsee and operates in one direction only. You can therefore compare the two trails by their length and the way each is routed.
As a hiking option, the Teichalm Circuit runs from the Nechnitz plateau to the Teichalm. It includes scenic alpine pasture paths, Teichalmsee and the raised bog. This means that, alongside the cross-country ski trails, a hiking route and its landscape features can also be part of your plans.
Active and cultural discoveries
At the Almerlebnispark Teichalm, the high ropes course features 9 circuits with more than 80 challenges at varying levels of difficulty. The park also has a 250-metre-long Flyingfox course. Reitstall Stockner offers riding lessons year-round, as well as rides and trail rides in the Almenland Nature Park. If you would like to include a range of activities in your stay, you will find climbing and riding options here alongside trails and cross-country ski routes.
The parish church of St Nicholas in Fladnitz an der Teichalm is a Late Gothic replacement building; the tower chapel is dated to 1486. Delicate vine paintings from 1512 decorate the vaults. The wooden sculpture trail, which leads to the summit of Gschaid-Nock, offers a different way to experience art outdoors. Around 45 wooden sculptures, benches and energy fountains line the route. They were created by woodcarver Erich Haider-Harrer.
Cheese production and outdoor pool
Groups can visit the Leitner dairy to see how cheese is made, provided they register in advance. The dairy produces several varieties of cave-ripened cheese from hay milk, as well as cream cheese and yoghurt. For groups, the tour offers a chance to learn about the production process on site; advance registration is required.
Fladnitz/Teichalm outdoor pool is located in the village centre, directly below Gasthof Donner. It has a heated outdoor swimming pool and a children's pool. Check the latest opening information before your visit.
