Mooskirchen combines tangible evidence of local history with a gently rolling landscape. During your stay, you can choose between architectural and musical history, walking and cycling routes, and a visit to the Hochstrasser fine distillery. Local highlights range from a house sign for a potter’s workshop to a hiking trail through typical Schilcher wine-growing areas. Culture and landscape offer different focal points for planning your trip.

Music history and craftsmanship in the village

A relief of the musical group “Mooskirchner Altsteirer” is displayed on the municipal building of the market town of Mooskirchen at Marktplatz 4. Johann Arbeiter founded the group in 1880; the relief links a specific place with the group’s history. Another detail tells a story of craftsmanship: above the entrance door of the house known as vlg. Steghafner, a house sign depicts a potter’s workshop. The carefully restored house known as vlg. Riemerweber at Oberer Markt 1, meanwhile, recalls Mooskirchen’s former residents, who were almost exclusively craftspeople. Thus, alongside musical history, skilled trades are also a central part of the village’s history.

Other historical landmarks include a millstone lying in the grass and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The millstone is the base of the pillory. The statue is associated with a bridge that was under the saint’s protection until 1930. These traces range from former crafts to a historical connection with a bridge, offering different points of interest for anyone interested in local history.

Parish church and architectural history

Mooskirchen already had a church; after the mother parish of Piber, it is the second-oldest in the Voitsberg district. The church building was structurally altered and took on its present form. Joachim Carlone raised the tower and gave it an onion dome. This brings two aspects together: the church’s place in the district’s earlier ecclesiastical history and a specifically documented alteration to its tower. If you are interested in architecture, the church offers its own way to explore the history of the village.

Gentle hills and a variety of routes

The landscape around Mooskirchen is gently rolling, with forests, meadows and vineyards. It is ideal for walks and cycling tours. The Mooskirchen Cycling Loop starts at the market square and passes through different parts of the market town. The Mooskirchen Schilcher Hiking Trail heads in a different direction: from Mooskirchen, it crosses municipal and district boundaries to Gundersdorf and passes through typical Schilcher wine-growing areas. The routes therefore differ in their course: the cycling loop starts at the market square, while the hiking trail connects Mooskirchen with a destination outside the municipality.

Visitor experience and arrival

The Hochstrasser fine distillery offers a visitor experience with guided tours and tastings about the production of fine spirits. This offers a different focus from the historic buildings and routes, and is particularly suited to visitors who would like to learn more about distillation. The Apricot Days are held there every July. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the exact dates for the year you wish to visit.

For rail travel, Mooskirchen-Söding station is a possible point of reference: it is served by GKB regional trains. From the station, it is about a five-minute cycle to the market square, the starting point of the Mooskirchen Cycling Loop. For a specific rail journey, you can check the GKB timetable for your chosen travel date.
