The TAU-Rieden Trail and the village chapel represent different aspects of Patzen: a hike through the vineyards of Patzenberg and the history of a building with specific dates. When planning the hike, first consider the length of the route. The historical information can be considered separately in terms of the chapel’s construction, an unrealised parish plan and the origin of the place name.
Hiking: Route Length and Waypoints
The TAU-Rieden Trail is classified as a moderately difficult hiking route. The route is 17.7 kilometres long, with a stated duration of five hours. This makes it a longer hike rather than a short detour. Plan your time accordingly and allow for personal breaks in addition; five hours is the stated route duration.
The trail runs through the vineyards of Patzenberg. After a section through the vineyards, you reach the “TAO-Ried Patzenberg – Rooted in Tieschen” stop. The names refer to different things: the TAU-Rieden Trail is the route, while TAO-Ried Patzenberg is a named stop. The Patzen Bridge is also a named point on the TAU-Rieden Trail. This distinction helps you tell the route apart from individual names in the route description.
Patzenberg Vineyard: Elevation and Soil
At an elevation of around 360 metres, Patzenberg Vineyard has calcareous pseudogleyed deep-ploughed soil derived from Tertiary sediments. The elevation is approximate; the description also identifies the soil type and geological origin. For those interested in the landscape and winegrowing, this adds another perspective to the route information: alongside the length and duration of the hike, the vineyard’s elevation and soil profile are also in focus.
Chapel and Local History
The Patzen chapel was built in 1834 by the village’s farmers. It is the oldest village chapel in the municipality of Tieschen and was most recently renovated in 1998. The year it was built and its most recent renovation mark different stages in its history. This gives the dates of both the chapel’s construction and a later renovation.
A separate historical project dates back to around 1770: at that time, the administrator of the Fürstenfeld Commandery designated Patzen as a parish centre and as the site for a church and rectory. The plan was not carried out. It should be distinguished from the chapel’s construction history: the plan concerned a church and rectory, while the chapel was built by the village’s farmers in 1834.
The place name has its own linguistic history, too. Patzen is of Slavic origin and derives from the place name “Pacinje”. Local history encompasses more than buildings: the origin of the name is also one of the cultural references that characterise Patzen.
Wine Tasting in Patzen
The JUFA Hotel Tieschen, at Patzen 90, has a wine shop and a gourmet shop offering wine tastings. These include tastings with a winemaker from the region on Fridays. If you would like to include this offering in your plans, check the dates and conditions before your visit.
