Mürzzuschlag combines cultural history with practical opportunities to get active outdoors. The museums focus on music, railways and winter sports; hiking trails, the Mürztal Cycle Path and the Mürzer Au offer a different perspective. This means you can choose different themes for your stay without reducing the town to just one topic.

Music, Railway and Winter Sports History

The Brahms Museum explores Johannes Brahms and his connection to Mürzzuschlag. It is considered the only museum of its kind in the world. Its permanent exhibition focuses on Brahms’s summer stays in 1884 and 1885. The composer lived in Mürzzuschlag for a total of nine months. The exhibition therefore offers a direct introduction to local music history and Brahms’s time in the town.

The SÜDBAHN Museum offers a different historical perspective: two locomotive halls house an exhibition on the railway line between Vienna and Trieste. Those particularly interested in the history of skiing will find a collection on the history of skiing and winter sports at the WinterSportMuseum Mürzzuschlag, which is among the largest and most significant of its kind in the world. Together, the three museums explore distinct themes—from the life of a composer to railway history and the development of winter sports.

The Kunsthaus Muerz focuses primarily on contemporary art. Its fields range from music and literature to fine art and architecture. The program includes exhibitions, readings, concerts and curator-led tours. It complements the museums’ historical themes with a broader understanding of art and culture.

Cycling and Hiking: Routes with Different Character

The Mürztal Cycle Path R5 runs from Mürzsteg via Mürzzuschlag to Bruck an der Mur. For most of its length, it follows the Mürz and descends gently; the route is suitable for families. When planning, it is therefore worth considering not only the section through Mürzzuschlag but also the route’s character. The Styrian Semmering Railway Hiking Trail offers a different focus: it follows the core zone of the Semmering Railway UNESCO World Heritage Site from Semmering station to the SÜDBAHN Museum in Mürzzuschlag. From Mürzzuschlag, you can reach Semmering station by train to start this trail.

The hike up the Stuhleck also starts in Mürzzuschlag and leads through forests and across alpine pastures. The options therefore differ considerably: R5 focuses on cycling and following the Mürz; the Semmering Railway Hiking Trail focuses on the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the railway museum as its destination; and the Stuhleck route takes in forests and alpine pastures.

Mürzer Au and Activities for Different Interests

The Mürzer Au is a protected landscape. The area has a forest nature trail and a fitness trail. These two facilities offer a specific reason to include the Au in your plans alongside the museums and longer routes. The Panoramaloipe is another seasonal attraction: it is a winter activity with floodlighting.

VIVAX Mürzzuschlag has a 25-meter-long sports and leisure pool, a 50-meter water slide and a separate area for young children. This makes it easy to choose based on the type of activity you want: museum exhibits, cycling or hiking routes, a protected landscape with designated facilities, winter sports or water activities.

For a culture-focused stay, the Brahms Museum, SÜDBAHN Museum, WinterSportMuseum and Kunsthaus Muerz each offer a different focus. If you want to spend more time outdoors, R5, the Semmering Railway Hiking Trail, Stuhleck and Mürzer Au also provide clearly distinct options. You can tailor your choice of Mürzzuschlag to the themes that matter to you.
