Langenwang brings together three distinct themes for a stay: the history of the Parish Church of St. Andrew, the trails in the Langenwanger Au and ice sports at the artificial ice rink. The railway is also a practical option for leisure trips: the town has its own railway station with a direct connection to the S6, making it suitable for this purpose. This lets you plan your trip around whichever focus interests you most—culture, riverside landscape or activity on the ice.

Church and local history

St. Andrew’s Church is considered the oldest building in Langenwang. The Parish Church of St. Andrew underwent extensive renovation or reconstruction from 1493 to 1496 and houses a Gothic winged altarpiece dating from 1509. Two specific dates are therefore relevant to exploring the town’s cultural history: the construction phase at the end of the 15th century and the later date of the altarpiece. The renovation and the furnishings can be considered as separate aspects, rather than being reduced to a single date. If you are particularly interested in architecture, you can focus on the building’s history; if you would rather highlight works of art, the winged altarpiece offers a distinct starting point.

Riverside landscape and routes

The Langenwanger Au lies about one kilometre west of Langenwang and is an extensive riverside area for recreation. Easy paths and educational trails pass through it; the bee educational trail, complete with an observation hive, adds a specific nature-related theme. This lets you combine walks through the landscape with a themed detour to learn about bees. The Langenwang Biotope Loop also passes through the scenic riverside landscape.

For more detailed orientation, the Langenwang Panoramic Loop has a described route: it starts in the centre of Langenwang and follows the path marked “1a” through the Langenwanger Au, continues into Langwanger Schwöbing and then into the Traibachgraben. At the junction with the Christtagsfreudeweg, it branches off towards Assantberg; it returns to the town centre via Lange Illach. While the Biotope Loop passes through the riverside landscape, the Panoramic Loop is described as having several further sections and a return route. The route description may change if trail conditions or signage are updated. So check the current trail markers before setting out.

The market town of Langenwang organises the Christtagsfreude hike every December. The exact event date may vary. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the event details in advance.

Getting there and ice sports

Langenwang has its own railway station with a direct connection to the S6, making it suitable for leisure trips too. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel dates so you can factor the connection into your plans.

The Langenwang artificial ice rink is another highlight. It has floodlighting and is a hub for ice skaters and ice hockey players from across the MĂĽrztal. Alongside local history and trails in the Au, ice skating and ice hockey are therefore further activities to choose from during your stay.
