Kindberg can be explored through its architectural history, art in public spaces and distinctive landscape landmarks. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul combines origins in the 13th century with fortifications from the 15th century; nearby are a granite cult stone, a portal with Neoclassical design elements and steel objects in an avenue. In the Mürztal, there is also a church on a rocky rise and routes with scenic views. You can shape your stay around culture, landscape or activity, rather than reducing the town to a single attraction.
Churches and Landscape
The Roman Catholic parish church of Saints Peter and Paul in Kindberg was originally built in the 13th century. In the 15th century, it was enclosed by a wall and towers and fortified. These two dates trace the site’s transformation: the original church building was followed by fortifications. The Calvary complex stands on a natural basalt rock. From Calvary itself, there are views across the town of Kindberg and the lower Mürztal. The church’s history and the landscape can be considered together here: the fortifications of the parish church and the view from Calvary highlight different aspects of the townscape.
The Church of St. George stands on a rocky rise in the western part of Kindberg and overlooks the Mürztal. This creates a different relationship with the landscape than at Calvary: there, the view extends across the town and the lower Mürztal; here, the church’s position above the valley takes centre stage.
Cultural Heritage in Detail
The cult stone consists of seven granite blocks, three of which are hewn. This clear description places the focus on material and form. The Schloss gate in Kindberg features Neoclassical design elements, with the Inzaghi coat of arms at its centre. The stone, architecture and coat of arms therefore offer different points of interest for a culture-focused stay.
The Kopfallee is lined with twelve sheet-steel objects created in 2011. This more recent, dated layer adds to the story of the parish church’s architectural history. Together, the granite blocks, the portal with its coat of arms and the steel objects create a varied picture of local cultural themes, without being confined to the same period or style.
Routes and Getting Around
The Schlossrunde starts in the centre of Kindberg and leads to Oberkindberg Castle. The K3-Zeller-Tour starts in the town centre and offers a panoramic view near Bergbauern Zeller. The two routes have different focal points: Oberkindberg Castle is the destination of the Schlossrunde, while the viewpoint near Bergbauern Zeller is a prominent landmark on the K3-Zeller-Tour.
The Mürztal Cycle Route R5 passes through Kindberg on its route from Mürzsteg to Bruck an der Mur. While the Schlossrunde and the K3-Zeller-Tour start in the town or village centre, Kindberg is one stop along the R5 route between two other named places. If you plan to cycle the route, check its current course and conditions before setting off.
Outdoor Pool on the Schlosswiese
Kindberg’s outdoor pool was built in 1876 and has been renovated several times since. It is located on the Schlosswiese, right in town. Parking for bicycles and cars, as well as a bus stop, are nearby. These practical location details complement the pool’s history and Kindberg’s other cultural and landscape attractions.
