Trautenfels Castle and the Neuhaus church ruins shape the cultural and hiking appeal of a stay in Pürgg-Trautenfels. Around the castle, history, a museum focused on the region and routes with different destinations come together. For your planning, the paths to Neuhaus and the longer tour to the Grimminghütte are particularly interesting.
Trautenfels Castle: History and Views
Trautenfels Castle stands on a rocky promontory at the foot of the Grimming. It was first mentioned in a document in 1261, when it was still known as Neuhaus Castle. In 1664, Count Siegmund Friedrich von Trauttmansdorff bought the castle, had it remodelled and refurnished, and gave it the name Trautenfels. The two dates mark different stages: its early mention under another name and its later transformation.
The Landscape Museum presents the cultural and natural history of the Liezen district across 13 rooms. The observation tower at Trautenfels Castle offers another perspective: it can be reached via 142 steps and is 30 metres high in total. This lets you pair the museum’s regional themes with a climb to a clearly defined destination.
Getting There and Routes Around Trautenfels
RegioBus routes 940 and 941 run from Stainach-Irdning station to the Trautenfels Schloss stop. From there, it is a five-minute walk to the museum. Check the timetable before travelling, as public transport schedules can change. Trautenfels Castle is also on the Enns Cycle Path and offers cyclists a place to stop.
The Neuhaus church ruins were built near Trautenfels in 1575 as a Protestant church and destroyed in 1599 during the Counter-Reformation. A memorial site, opened in 1992, now stands on the foundations of the former church. A short, contemplative walking trail leads there from Trautenfels Castle in about ten minutes.
Another path starts at the car park behind Trautenfels Castle and leads to the Neuhaus church ruins in about 15 minutes. Its final section follows the Bible Trail. The two time estimates refer to different starting points: one begins at the castle, the other at the car park behind it. You can choose the route that suits where you want to start.
For a longer outing, the “Tressenstein from Trautenfels Castle” route starts at the castle car park and reaches the Grimminghütte after about an hour. The KulturNaturGenuss circular trail passes the castle ponds and has a different destination from the routes to Neuhaus. The Neuhaus church ruins near Trautenfels Castle can also be visited on an excursion by train on the “Weg des Buches” (Path of the Book). Check the current tour conditions before setting out.
The options can be distinguished by specific interests: the museum and tower focus on the castle and regional history, the paths to Neuhaus lead to the memorial site, and the tour to the Grimminghütte offers a longer option.
