Gaishorn am See can be explored through several distinct highlights: the swimming lake and its lakeside path, the hike to Mödlinger Hut, two churches with historical dates, and winter activities. When planning, it is worth considering each question according to your plans: at the lake, the route and accessibility matter; for the hut, the walking time; and for ice-stock sport, the date.

Swimming Lake and Lakeside Hiking Trail

Gaishorn swimming lake has a large sunbathing lawn, a children’s play area and a viewing platform. There are various ways to spend time at the lake: on the lawn, at the play area or taking in the view from the platform. This makes the swimming lake a place where you can choose between relaxing, playing and enjoying the view.

The lakeside hiking trail follows the northern shore of Lake Gaishorn, passing a bathing cove, information boards and bridges. From there, you can enjoy views of the reed belt on the opposite southern shore. The route therefore focuses both on the stops along the shore and on the view across the lake.

Most of the lakeside hiking trail is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. This qualification is important for planning: the information applies to most of the route, not necessarily every section. If a particular section is important to you, check its suitability in advance.

Hike to Mödlinger Hut

From the ÖBB railway station or the centre of Gaishorn am See, you can reach Mödlinger Hut on foot in 2½ hours. You can choose between hiking trail 671 and the forest road. The time estimate gives you a specific timeframe for the tour: allow 2½ hours for the walk to the hut and plan for a possible return journey separately.

Every year, Mödlinger Hut hosts the traditional ice-stock sport competition between the valley communities of Johnsbach and Gaishorn am See. Unlike the hike, the main consideration here is the annual event date. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the date in advance.

Churches and Historical Dates

The Church of St. Virgilius of Salzburg on Sonnberg was built between 1448 and 1465 and bears the date 1524. The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity in Gaishorn is dated 1180 and 1520. For the Church of St. Virgilius, a construction period and a further date are listed, while the Church of the Holy Trinity is associated with two years. Alongside the lake and hiking, the churches offer a distinct cultural and historical focus for your stay.

Winter Activities

During the winter months, the recreational area at Lake Gaishorn is used as an ice-skating rink. Cross-country ski trails are also maintained around Gaishorn am See. These two different activities add to the options for a winter trip: ice skating at the lake and cross-country skiing on the trails around Gaishorn. If either activity is the reason for your trip, check the latest information for your planned date in advance.
