Gulsen adds a special natural highlight: the endemic Pittoni houseleek is found exclusively there. Other attractions include Lake Kraubath, activities, the parish church of Kraubath, and rail and bus connections. When planning a stay, you can prioritize nature, leisure, culture and travel according to your interests.
Gulsen: Protected Area and Special Species
Two areas on Gulsen’s southern slope have been designated nature reserves. Since 2006, they have been part of European Protected Area No. 5, “Upper and Middle Mur River with Puxer Auwald, Puxer Wand and Gulsen.”
The endemic Pittoni houseleek (Sempervivum Pittonii) is found exclusively on Gulsen. Around 50 different butterfly species live on the slopes. For nature enthusiasts, Gulsen combines protected areas with the opportunity to observe biological diversity.
Trails, Leisure Activities and a Hike
Mountain biking tours and riding trails are available in Kraubath an der Mur. There is also a ski lift as a leisure amenity. Before making specific plans, check whether it is operating during your travel dates.
A hike documented by the Austrian Alpine Club in June 2025 started at the car park in Kraubathgraben, at an elevation of 890 m, and led via Wasserwirtalm to Kraubatheck. As a walking activity, the hike differs from the mountain biking tours and riding trails, allowing you to compare Kraubath’s leisure activities according to your preferred way of being active.
Lake Kraubath and the Parish Church
Lake Kraubath has a water surface area of 4 ha and a depth of 7 m. Its bathing facilities include a beach volleyball court and a large sunbathing area with plenty of natural shade. The lake offers both an opportunity for activity and a place to relax, making it a different focus from Gulsen’s protected areas and species.
Kraubath Parish Church is dedicated to Saint George and was elevated to parish church status in 1524. This clearly dated link to the area’s religious history complements the town’s nature and leisure activities.
