Graßnitzberg can be explored via trails through vineyards, an uphill E-bike climb, and places to stop with different conditions. The routes vary in how you travel and what landmarks they follow: one goes uphill by bike, one starts at Spielfeld station, and one leads to the lookout tower on the Slovenian side. First decide whether you would like to plan your stay around cycling, hiking, the views, or a stop for refreshments.

Cycling and hiking on different routes

The hilly Ottenberg-Ratsch option on the South Styrian Wine Road Tour is suitable for E-bikes. After crossing Spielfeld, it climbs uphill to Graßnitzberg. The climb is a defining feature of this cycling tour and a practical consideration for your plans: you can decide whether to include an E-bike leg with Graßnitzberg as your destination in your stay.

The Spielfeld Vineyards – Nature – Archaeology Trail takes a different approach: it leads from Spielfeld station up to Graßnitzberg, past Buschenschanken and through vineyards. Unlike the E-bike tour, the route here is marked by the station as its starting point, as well as by vineyards and Buschenschanken. This offers a clear point of reference for anyone planning a walk and wanting to experience these landscape features along the way.

Another hike leads from the car park not far from Weingut Tement to the lookout tower on Platschberg on the Slovenian side. The lookout tower offers panoramic views of South Styria and Slovenia. Here, the focus is on a viewpoint across the border, while the other two routes lead to Graßnitzberg. The tower is therefore a clearly defined destination for anyone wishing to include a cross-border route with views in their plans.

Choose between the routes based on their respective highlights: by bike, the route climbs uphill to Graßnitzberg; on foot, choose between a trail through vineyards and past Buschenschanken, or a hike to the lookout tower on the Slovenian side. This lets you decide whether the climb, the scenery along the way, or the panoramic views at your destination should be the main focus of your outing.

Vineyards, tastings and places to stop

Weinhof Kugel is located amid the vineyards on Graßnitzberg. It offers wine tastings by prior arrangement during opening hours. Check the date and opening hours before you travel if you would like to plan a tasting in advance. The Buschenschank at Weingut Primus is open to groups by prior arrangement. When planning, it is therefore worth considering the occasion: at Kugel, the focus is on a tasting during opening hours; at Primus, it is on a pre-booked group visit.

Muster Stub'n Buschenschank offers another reason to stop: it is housed in a more than 250-year-old building with a partially thatched roof. It serves wines from Weingut Polz-Kiefer and delicacies from regional producers. Here, the history of the building combines with a selection of wines and regional delicacies. When choosing a place to stop, you can therefore consider both the building’s distinctive features and what it offers.
