At Sankt Johann Bei Herberstein, the Feistritz leaves the uplands of its upper course and enters a broad, open valley. This transition shapes the character of the local landscape. Alongside the river and gorge, religious buildings, Roman stones, and castle architecture each offer distinct themes. If you are looking for a destination that combines nature and culture, you can consider these highlights separately and decide which ones you want to shape your stay.

The Feistritz, the Gorge, and the Valley

The Feistritz Gorge is narrow and deeply cut into the landscape. Gartenschloss Herberstein rises on a 40-meter-high rock there, with the river flowing around it on three sides. The protected Herberstein primrose is also closely linked to this area: it grows on the rocky slopes that descend steeply to the Feistritz and on the mountain rock in Herberstein Gorge. The river, rock, and castle can thus be viewed as a connected landscape.

A smaller-scale experience awaits on the nature trail, where stone sofas beside the Feistritz invite visitors to linger. Further along the Feistritz Valley, river walks and canoe trips on the unspoiled Feistritz are among the experiences on offer. In Sankt Johann Bei Herberstein itself, the landscape is shaped above all by the point where the river leaves the uplands of its upper course and enters the broad, open valley. The Herberstein Trail leads from the center of Stubenberg via Lake Stubenberg and the Herberstein Animal World to Sankt Johann Bei Herberstein.

Cultural History at Specific Sites

The Holy Sepulchre is located on Klausenberg. This Calvary complex consists of three buildings and a crucifixion group. The Stations of the Cross lead there along a forest path. In the Federal Monuments Authority document dated June 23, 2026, both Calvary and the Calvary stations by the church are listed as protected monuments under a regulation.

The former monastery building was completed in 1656 and is essentially a four-wing structure around a rectangular courtyard decorated with arcades. The four wings frame the courtyard, and the arcades define its design. Today, the building is known as Haus der Frauen (House of Women). A total of 18 Roman stones are located in the area of the old monastery building and the church.

Herberstein Castle brings together Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles. The “Life in the Castle” exhibition offers a different perspective, providing insights into the residents’ daily lives, domestic culture, and work areas. The castle’s architectural forms are thus presented alongside themes from the life lived and shaped there.
