In the 1770 census, the Mönichwald estate was divided into the Karnerviertel and Schmiedviertel sections. This local history gives the name Karnerviertel a specific historical context. You can combine a look at history with walking trails, the leisure lake and seasonal activities in Mönichwald and at the Wechsel.
Local History and Churches
Historic Karnerviertel emerged from the settlements of Saager-, Khärner- and Munichbauerrott. The three names offer a distinct perspective on how the quarter came about; the 1770 division describes the estate’s subdivision into two sections. Both aspects are part of local history, but they do not tell the same story.
The churches also reflect different historical periods. The first church in Mönichwald was dedicated to Saint Peter in Munichwalde; Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg consecrated it on 17 December 1163. The present parish church is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and was built in 1716. Thus, an early church consecration and the construction of the present parish church stand as separate milestones.
The crooked Pestkreuz (Plague Cross) in Breitenbrunn lies on the route from Waldbach towards Hochwechsel. It was built in the 16th century. If you are interested in historic places along trails, you can include this landmark in a hike in the area.
Leisure Lake and Walking Trails
Mönichwald Leisure Lake lies at the foot of the Wechsel at an elevation of around 600 metres and covers 7,500 square metres. Visitors can ride pedal boats and go stand-up paddling there; these activities are seasonal. The leisure complex also includes a beach volleyball court and an asphalt track. This offers different ways to enjoy a visit to the lake: with an activity on the water or with the listed options on land. If you are planning a specific visit, check seasonal availability and the current status of the facilities.
The “Joglland-Roas” runs along easy, flat walking trails beside the Lafnitz and around Mönichwald Leisure Lake. This makes it possible to combine a walk by the water with a trail along the river. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Hiking, Cycling and Winter Activities
There are numerous hiking and walking options at the summit of Hochwechsel, including a hut-to-hut hike from one Schwaig (alpine pasture hut) to the next. Another hike leads from Waldbach through Mönichwald, via the municipality of Waldbach-Mönichwald, and on to Festenburg Castle. Festenburg was built around 1200 by the Lords of Stubenberg. This hike therefore combines a specific route with a historic destination.
For mountain biking, the “Der große Jogl” route passes through the Riegersberg district to Waldbach-Mönichwald, specifically to the Mönichwald district. It is an alternative to the walking trails by the leisure lake: here, the focus is on a designated mountain bike route, while the “Joglland-Roas” follows walking trails.
In winter, the Hochwechsellifte Mönichwald ski lifts offer family-friendly runs as well as ski and snowboard lessons for beginners. The lifts and lessons are seasonal; check the current options before your trip. At Rabl-Kreuz, cross-country trails are groomed daily for both classic and skate skiing. The offer depends on snow conditions, so check the conditions and trail status before travelling. Cross-country skiing equipment can be hired directly at the Rabl-Kreuz Hut; be sure to confirm the current availability of this seasonal service too.
Krapfenkirtag and Park
Every July, Mönichwald hosts the traditional Krapfenkirtag, featuring more than 100 different varieties of Krapfen. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the exact date for your travel year.
A floral peacock in the park in Mönichwald invites you to enjoy a leisurely visit. This attraction can be visited independently of the Krapfenkirtag.
