Riegersdorf’s history can be traced through its name forms, old cadastral records, and location between two streams that mark its boundaries. This creates a tangible connection between historical settlement development and the landscape.

Early Names and Historical Traces

An early historical reference dates back to 970: Riegersdorf, together with Fürstenfeld, belonged to the Marchia Caretana, the march on the middle Mur River, from which Styria emerged. Riegersdorf was most likely founded by a man named Rudiger, who was mentioned in 1128 as the founder of Rovdgerestorf, today’s St. Johann in der Haide.

A document from 1265 contains the name Rugersdorfer for the first time. A record from 1400 names Niclas der Riegerstorffer; Riegersdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1405. These details refer to different early records: a name form, a person, and the documented mention of the village. Niclas der Riegerstorffer was a town judge in FĂĽrstenfeld and donated a mill in Riecherstorff to the Augustinian convent there.

The historical use of land and local trades are also part of the village’s recorded history. For centuries, the Styrian princes granted six Hufen and three farmsteads in Riegersdorf as fiefs. In 1612, Bernhardin von Herberstein acquired another part of Riegersdorf. Blacksmithing was also a historical trade in the village.

Streams, Settlement, and Old Cadastral Records

The Schmiedbach forms Riegersdorf’s northern boundary and flows into the Feistritz. To the south, the Marbach marks the boundary; it also flows into the Feistritz. Riegersdorf was built on a rise in the Feistritz lowlands, which ruled out the risk of flooding from the Feistritz. The two streams therefore provide a clear north–south orientation for the village’s location.

Historical cadastral records add details of the settlement structure to this picture of the landscape. The Josephine Cadastre of 1787 and the Franciscan Cadastre of 1823 show two rows of houses that are completely identical in their basic layout. Smallholdings known as Söllner-Häuseln were also built in the Schmiedbach area. The maps and this term document different aspects of settlement development: the arrangement of the houses and a particular form of smallholding.
