Mönichwald combines trails with clearly named route sections, a seasonal leisure lake and a parish church with a long history. The Alm-Runde begins in the town center, passes the lake and continues to Waldbach; the Hochwechsel Springs Trail heads towards Hochwechsel. On hot summer days, the leisure lake offers a chance to cool off, along with beach volleyball and pedal boating. The parish church adds its own cultural and historical dimension. You can plan your stay around a hike, a summer’s day by the water or a look at the local church art.

Hiking in Different Directions

The Alm-Runde offers an easy-to-follow route starting from the town center: it passes the leisure lake and continues to Waldbach. The return to Mönichwald follows the well-marked hiking trail 07. The starting point, an intermediate point and the return route are all specified; the description makes the loop especially appealing if you’d like to connect the town center, lake and Waldbach in a single hike.

The Hochwechsel Springs Trail takes a different direction: it leads from Mönichwald towards Hochwechsel; after three kilometers, turn left towards the Hochwechsellifte ski lifts. This route differs from the Alm-Runde, whose return to Mönichwald is described as following hiking trail 07. The Naturfreunde Wimpassing mountain hut is located in Mönichwald, right beside hiking trail No. 9 (907). This location and trail number provide another specific reference point when checking trail names before your hike. As trail and road conditions can change, check the current situation before setting out, especially for the Hochwechsel Springs Trail.

The Leisure Lake for Summer Days

Mönichwald Leisure Lake offers a chance to cool off on hot summer days and is a relaxing place to spend time. There is also a beach volleyball court, and pedal boating is available. This combination offers different ways to enjoy a summer’s day at the lake, from a peaceful visit to getting active on the court or out on the water. The lake is a seasonal visitor destination. If the lake is important to your trip, check the bathing season dates in advance.

Church and Art History

A church in Mönichwald was consecrated on December 17, 1163, by Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg. Today’s parish church is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and was built in 1716. The town’s church history thus encompasses both a date from the 12th century and the construction of the present-day church in the early 18th century. The paintings in the parish church were created by Johann Cyriak Hackhofer, a painter from Vorau Abbey, and his pupils. Alongside its consecration and construction date, the church’s history also includes this specific artistic attribution.

Mönichwald on the Styrian Flower Route

Mönichwald was one of the flower villages that founded the “Styrian Flower Route” association in 1990. The Styrian Flower Route leads visitors to the Mönichwald district, where the leisure lake invites them to relax. This route connection adds another way to discover the town, alongside its hiking trails and parish church.
