Thalgau is located by Lake Fuschl. When choosing where to stay, it helps to consider how you would like to balance culture and physical activity: the Baroque church and local history offer historical highlights, alongside trails, a climbing wall, and an outdoor swimming pool. Hikes range in duration from about one hour to three hours. This makes it easy to plan around your interests and the time available.
Hiking by duration
The Achen Circular Trail (No. 16) in Thalgau is an easy walking and hiking route covering 1.5 kilometres and taking about one hour. The Fuschlsee Circular Trail (No. 30) is 12 kilometres long, moderately difficult, and takes three hours. The Achen Circular Trail is therefore the shorter and easier option; the Fuschlsee Circular Trail takes considerably more time and is moderately difficult. When planning, bear in mind that the duration of the Achen Circular Trail is an estimate. Conditions on the ground may affect both hikes; check them before setting out.
Baroque architecture and local history
Thalgau Parish Church is a Baroque hall church built between 1745 and 1755, and has largely retained its Baroque furnishings. Its construction period and preserved furnishings offer two specific ways to explore Baroque history. The House of History in Thalgau documents the village’s history and presents it in an engaging way. The museum in Hundsmarktmühle features special exhibitions that change annually, covering local history and rural life in earlier times. In comparison, the House of History focuses on the village itself, while the exhibitions at Hundsmarktmühle also explore rural life in earlier times.
The Koloman tradition and Wartenfels Castle ruins
Kolomannsbründl is a widely known sacred spring on Kolomansberg and is associated with the Koloman tradition. Kolomansberg Church, Austria’s oldest wooden church, stands north of Thalgau at the summit of Kolomansberg. The ruins of Wartenfels Castle can be reached from the Wartenfels Forester’s House in about a 20-minute walk. Weather and trail conditions may affect access; check them before setting out.
Activities and getting there
