There are two main ways to explore Aggsbach Markt: church history and hiking. The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary has a long history as a building and parish church; when choosing a route, different features can help you decide, including distance and destination. If you’re looking for a hotel, it’s best to first decide whether culture or hiking will shape your stay.
Church and the Cultural History of the Wachau
The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary was built between 1286 and 1300. It is a former late Romanesque, flat-roofed, three-aisled basilica with pillars, a raised central nave and a Gothic rib vault. The church also has two Romanesque portals. Its architectural features create distinct accents: a late Romanesque basic form, Romanesque portals and a Gothic vault. Those interested in church architecture can distinguish several specific features rather than describing the church with just one stylistic term.
After a period as a popular pilgrimage church, it became an independent parish church in 1724. This year marks a change in the church’s role, not its construction period: it was built between 1286 and 1300. The building history and the later history of the parish can therefore be understood as two distinct stages.
The themed trail in Aggsbach Markt shifts the focus from a single building to the cultural history of the Wachau: twelve information boards outline this regional subject. The church and the trail thus offer different cultural highlights. The church focuses on architectural styles and its religious role, while the trail explores the cultural history of the Wachau. This offers two different ways to enjoy a stay focused on history and culture.
Hiking: The Circular Trail and the Jauerling Route
The five-kilometre Edelberg Circular Trail starts in the market square of Aggsbach Markt. The 355-metre-high Edelberg is in the municipality of Aggsbach-Markt in the Wachau, on the left bank of the Danube. The trail’s length and starting point provide practical reference points for planning. The Jauerling Route 02 is laid out differently: it runs from Aggsbach Markt to Maria Laach, passing through woodland and meadows, by isolated hamlets and up to the Jauerling plateau. This means you can choose between a circular route with a named starting point and a route with a destination. The Bireben Circular Trail follows an unpaved forest path through a mixed hornbeam and oak woodland, adding this specific landscape type to the choice of routes.
Sturdy hiking boots, rain protection, and enough drinks and food are recommended for the Jauerling Route 02. Include this equipment in your plans if you intend to hike the route. Aggsbach Markt railway station is at the foot of the Jauerling, in the heart of the Wachau.
