Maibachl makes Warmbad-Judendorf’s thermal connection tangible: thermal water from Warmbad emerges from the ground here. The place name also points to a history of thermal baths and spa bathing, while archaeological trails and KärntenTherme reveal other sides of the area. Nature, cultural history and water-based activities offer different starting points for planning a trip.
Thermal History and Maibachl
Warmbad-Judendorf is named after a thermal spa and bathing establishment that operated in Roman times and then again in the 19th century. At Maibachl, thermal water from Warmbad emerges from the ground at around 29°C; it is rich in calcium, magnesium and hydrogen carbonate. The historic bathing culture and the water’s composition show two different sides of the thermal theme: one tells the story of past use, while the other is a natural feature of the area.
Archaeological Traces and Trails
The Late Antique fortifications of the Kadischen are still clearly visible in the landscape. The Warmbad Archaeology Trail passes through different periods of the area’s history, from Late Antique settlement to industrial use. It is six kilometres long and has 13 information panels in the Alpine-Adriatic languages and English. The trail passes the Late Antique hilltop settlement on Tscheltschnigkogel and the Durezza Shaft Cave, with the remains of 20,000 human bones, before reaching evidence of industrial use in the area, including lime kilns and shot and brick factories.
The Warmbad Nature and Archaeology Trail is a three-kilometre hiking route that starts at Kärnten Therme Warmbad-Villach. This starting point gives you a clear reference for where the trail begins. The Dobratsch area also has the Roman road in Warmbad. At three kilometres, the Nature and Archaeology Trail is half as long as the six-kilometre Warmbad Archaeology Trail.
Thermal Baths and Swimming Training
KärntenTherme offers FUN, FIT and SPA facilities in Warmbad-Villach across an area of 11,000 m². The FUN area has ring slides and an uphill-flowing current channel, as well as an outdoor water play area, a baby zone and an indoor weather tower. The weather tower and water play area create a contrast between indoors and outdoors. The 25-metre sports pool has six lanes and is suitable for swimming training, giving it a different focus from the FUN area. Facilities may change. Check the details before your trip if you plan to use a particular area.
Landscape Setting
Warmbad Villach is part of the Dobratsch Nature Park’s nature and landscape conservation areas. This protected-area setting complements the historic traces with a landscape perspective and offers a different way to explore the area than visiting individual archaeological sites.
The trails give your stay a historical focus, while the sports pool offers a clear emphasis on training. When choosing Warmbad-Judendorf as a destination, you can consider whether you would rather explore archaeological and historical traces or plan to swim for training.
