Chapel art, regional craftsmanship and nature trails offer different ways to explore Winkl during your stay. You can start by deciding whether culture, a special habitat or a specific route should be the deciding factor. The seasonal toboggan run adds another activity to the mix.

Briccius Chapel and Regional Handicrafts

The Baroque altarpiece in Briccius Chapel depicts 16 scenes from the legend of Briccius. The legend itself thus shapes the subject of the artwork. The chapel and healing spring were renovated in 2004. The Heilwasser Bricciusweg leads to the legendary Briccius Chapel high above Heiligenblut. If you are interested in the legend, you will find both an artistic detail and a named trail with the chapel as its destination here.

The button-making workshop at Sturm-Archehof makes buttons from natural materials sourced from the region. The regional origin of the materials is therefore a concrete part of the craft theme. Sturm-Archehof is home to Brown Mountain Sheep, Tauernschecken goats, Austrian Grey geese, Cröllwitz turkeys, Hooded ducks, Sulmtaler chickens and Blue Vienna rabbits. The animals kept on the farm may change over time. Craftsmanship and the various animal breeds are two distinct aspects of the same farm.

Moor, Waterfall Views and Trails

Kachl Moor is a fen and provides an important habitat for special plants and animals. Here, the focus is on a natural area, not a single viewpoint. The Gößnitzfall–Kachlmoor nature trail starts at the Retschitzbrücke car park in Winkl. This also provides a specific starting point for orientation; the trail name refers to the Gößnitzfall and Kachl Moor.

The Natura Mystica trail includes a 15-minute spur path to a viewing platform overlooking Gößnitzfall. The Feuerinsel, a rest and barbecue area in the middle of the forest, is also located along the Natura Mystica circular trail. The two places offer different experiences: the spur path leads to the viewpoint, while the Feuerinsel is described as a rest and barbecue area.

The Kräuterwand walking trail runs along the Winkl district, past Wolfgang Chapel and up to Kräuterwand. Its route combines a chapel with the named destination of Kräuterwand. This makes it possible to distinguish this trail thematically from the moor and waterfall routes.

Scenery and Seasonal Options

At Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, the Nationalpark Kristall Großglockner offers views of Großglockner and the Pasterze Glacier. With a little luck, you can observe marmots and ibex in their natural habitat. While the viewpoint directs your gaze to the landscape, spotting the animals explicitly depends on a little luck.

A seasonal toboggan run is located in the Winkl district, 500 m outside the centre, and is 1.1 kilometres long. If you plan to use it during your stay, it is best to check in advance whether it is scheduled to be open on your travel dates.
