Kirchbach lies between the Gailtal Alps and the Carnic Alps. Different themes can help guide your choice of where to stay: the mill hiking trail between Kirchbach and TreĂźdorf, the architectural history of the parish church, and the tradition of Gailtal Alpine cheese. This lets you focus on the interests that matter for your trip, rather than deriving a set itinerary from the various options.
Hiking Trails and Routes
The Treßdorf–Kirchbach mill hiking trail passes through Treßdorf and continues to the Treßdorf watermill. As a circular hike, the mill trail connects Kirchbach and Treßdorf. The historic Henneberg Trail is located within the municipal areas of Kirchbach and Dellach. Another type of route is the WY_N10 Kirchbach–Stranig–Treßdorf–Kirchbach loop, which passes through the municipality of Kirchbach. The routes therefore differ in whether the focus is on a connection between two places, a historic hiking trail, or a loop within the municipality.
A further route has specific endpoints and an approximate distance: it runs for about 10 kilometres from the Gundersheim Gail bridge along the River Gail to the Waidegg Gail bridge, with no significant climbs. In winter, there are cross-country skiing opportunities in Kirchbach and the surrounding area. This seasonal option differs from the hiking trails described above, so plan for it accordingly if you are visiting in winter.
Kirchbach’s Architectural History
Kirchbach Parish Church was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1768/69 and dates back to an earlier Late Gothic building. At the western end of the village stands Thurn am Tabor Castle, first mentioned in historical records in 1364. The history of ownership of the MaroschHof in TreĂźdorf can be traced back 600 years. Each of these three architectural and local histories has its own time reference: the development of a church building, a first recorded mention, and a long, traceable history of ownership.
As another nearby architectural highlight, the area around Kirchbach features the branch church of St. Helena on Wieserberg. It is a Romanesque hall church with a Late Gothic tower and is located in the municipality of Dellach. This location helps distinguish it from the buildings in Kirchbach itself.
Alpine Cheese and Seasonal Events
Alpine farming has a long tradition in Kirchbach. Gailtal Alpine cheese is made according to old recipes on numerous alpine pastures. The cross-border cheese hiking trail in the Carnic Alps is 30 kilometres long and can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike, or on horseback.
The Apple Festival in Kirchbach takes place every year on the first Sunday in October. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the date for the relevant year. The solar-heated Kirchbach outdoor swimming pool is also a seasonal option to consider. The facilities include a beach volleyball court, a playground, and a large sunbathing lawn; check seasonal opening arrangements before your trip.
More Activities
In Waidegg, the Nassfeldgolf complex has an 18-hole course and an adjoining 6-hole practice course. A flight takes off from Stöfflerberg at an altitude of 1,150 metres and lands in Kirchbach opposite the outdoor swimming pool at an altitude of 642 metres. If you plan to take this flight, check the arrangements with the operator in advance.
Kirchbach can therefore be chosen according to clearly distinct interests: circular walks and mills, historic buildings, alpine farming, or seasonal activities.
