Explore Jenig through its hiking trails and ecclesiastical architectural history. The Rattendorf Nature Trail & Water Adventure Trail offers a circular route, while Kreuth ob Jenig is a mountain hike at the foot of the Gailtal Alps, with views of the Carnic Alps. There is also stage 9B of the Way of the Book pilgrimage route, which leads to Jenig and on to the Protestant church. For planning your trip, these can be divided into three main themes: a circular route, a mountain hike and a pilgrimage route with a church as its destination.

Hiking between Rattendorf and Kreuth

The Rattendorf Nature Trail & Water Adventure Trail is a circular route about 4.5 km long. It starts just beyond the bridge, which you reach by turning towards Rattendorf at the petrol station in Jenig. Both the turnoff in Jenig and the bridge are therefore important landmarks for finding your way. Its approximate length and circular layout give this route a different planning profile from Kreuth ob Jenig, where the mountain setting and views take centre stage.

Kreuth ob Jenig is a mountain hike at the foot of the Gailtal Alps, with views of the Carnic Alps. The starting point is Berghotel Presslauer, about 4 km uphill from Jenig. To reach Jenig for this hike, take the bus from Hermagor towards Kötschach-Mauthen. Check the timetable separately. The bus information refers to the journey to Jenig; the hike starts farther uphill at Berghotel Presslauer. Keep this distinction in mind when planning your journey if Kreuth is the main focus of your outing.

A pilgrimage route leads to the Protestant church

Stage 9B of the Way of the Book pilgrimage route follows trail 1 to Jenig and continues to the Protestant church. The church is therefore a named destination on the stage. Those interested in pilgrimage routes will find a concrete connection here between the route and a church visit. Unlike Kreuth, which is described as a mountain hike with Alpine views, this stage centres on the connection to the Protestant church.

Churches and architectural heritage

Jenig-Rattendorf Church was consecrated on 19 July 1936. Stones from the surrounding quarries and mountain streams were used to build it. This pairs a precise consecration date with a specific detail about the building’s history.

The Protestant parish church of Jenig (Augsburg Confession) is a listed monument and is recorded as protected in the Federal Monuments Office register dated 19 June 2026. The choir of Rattendorf parish church also offers an architectural point of interest: it has a stellar rib vault with interlacing ribs above wall piers with twisted columns. A stellar rib vault can be recognised by its star-shaped pattern of ribs; in Rattendorf, the choir is characterised by interlacing ribs, wall piers and twisted columns.

The Roman Hadnmauer barrier is also a listed monument, based on a decision under Section 3. It is likewise recorded in the Federal Monuments Office register dated 19 June 2026. Church architecture, architectural details and the barrier offer different cultural and historical perspectives on Jenig and its surroundings.

Accommodation and trip planning

When looking for accommodation in Jenig, it is worth matching your choice to the main focus of your trip. Kreuth’s stated starting point is particularly important: Berghotel Presslauer is about 4 km uphill from Jenig. If this hike is your main goal, take its location into account when planning. Check the timetable separately for the bus from Hermagor to Jenig towards Kötschach-Mauthen.
