Milling, Craftsmanship and History
Sirnitz brings together milling, church history and outdoor destinations. The Sirnitz Mill represents continuous operation and local processing, while St. Nicholas Church reflects the area’s architectural history. The Kneipp hiking trail leads from Sirnitz to the Enge Gurk. A natural swimming pond, footgolf and a herb tour add other activities to these highlights. When choosing a short stay, it helps to consider these different interests separately.
The Sirnitz Mill has been in operation since 1997. It traditionally and gently mills rye, wheat and spelt. Both the types of grain used and the milling method are central to its work. Guided tours are available for interested visitors on milling days; milling demonstrations are only possible by prior arrangement with the local mill association. Before your trip, check whether a date is scheduled and when it will take place. This lets you plan a visit to the mill around its craft and grain processing.
St. Nicholas Church in Sirnitz was first mentioned in 1179 or 1181. The parish church has a Baroque charnel house dating from 1513. The two dates refer to different points in time: the first concerns the church’s mention, and the second the Baroque charnel house. Today’s Albeck Castle was built in 1680 using stones from the demolished castle. The reused stones connect the older castle with the later one in this history of the site. The history of the church buildings and the castle thus offers several points of interest, without reducing the historical information to a single date.
Trails and Outdoor Activities
The Kneipp hiking trail leads from Sirnitz for around 1.5 kilometres to a small waterfall in the Enge Gurk. The route and its destination go together: the approximate distance gives you a sense of the length, while the waterfall provides a clearly named endpoint. The trail is a separate excursion highlight alongside the historic buildings.
The Sirnitz natural swimming pond is in Sirnitz-Frankenberg, at the entrance to Sirnitz. This places another outdoor destination at the village entrance, while the Kneipp hiking trail leads from Sirnitz to the Enge Gurk. The information describes two different outdoor highlights for your stay: a trail with a waterfall as its destination and a natural swimming pond.
Since summer 2022, a footgolf course with 14 holes has been located in Sirnitz right next to the football pitch. If you would like to visit, check the current operating conditions in advance. Footgolf is a different kind of activity from the walk to the waterfall: here, the course’s holes define the experience.
Herb Tour and Regional Landscape
In Sirnitz-Albeck, guests can join local producers on a herb tour through the countryside. This offers an activity with local connections in addition to walking the trail. As tour arrangements can change, check how the tour is organised in advance.
The Sirnitz-Hochrindl region lies within the Nockberge Nature and Landscape Conservation Area. This regional context offers a different perspective from the specific route from Sirnitz to the Enge Gurk: one relates to the region, the other to an individual excursion destination. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider both individual activities and the wider landscape.
