Pöttelsdorf brings together several themes for planning a trip: listed churches, archaeological history and culinary discoveries. There are also cycling options with different ways to plan your ride. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether you want to focus your stay primarily on culture, culinary delights or a cycling tour.
Churches and Historical Heritage
The Catholic filial church of the Nativity of Mary and the Protestant parish church A.B. in Pöttelsdorf are protected as listed buildings under an ordinance. Both are included in the Burgenland register of monuments dated 19 June 2026. The former Protestant schoolhouse is also listed and protected there, although under a decision pursuant to §3. It is therefore worth taking a closer look at the different functions and grounds for protection of these three buildings: in addition to the two churches, the former schoolhouse is also part of the town’s architectural heritage.
Another aspect of the town’s religious history is the devotional image “Our Lady of the Stone’s Throw” in the chapel in Pöttelsdorf. It soon attracted many pilgrims. This long-standing significance adds a history of veneration to the story of the churches: alongside the buildings themselves, the focus here is on an image that moved people to make pilgrimages to Pöttelsdorf.
Archaeological Traces and Nature Park
Archaeological finds attest to continuous settlement in Pöttelsdorf from the earliest Neolithic period through to the Middle Ages. Another trace that can be dated more precisely lies south of the town: a Roman country estate stood in the Hottergrund fields, on the right bank of the Wulka. According to coin finds, it remained in use until around 380 AD. The long history of settlement and the later Roman estate offer distinct points of reference for understanding the town’s historical depth.
Pöttelsdorf is also part of the Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park. This connection adds the town’s nature park setting to its cultural and historical themes. When planning your visit, you can therefore weigh up whether to focus more on the historical themes or on a cycling option.
Cycling: a specified route or individual planning
The B30 “Koglweg” cycle route is 34 kilometres long. The Rosalia Genuss Tour passes through Pöttelsdorf and can be planned individually for an e-bike ride. The options offer different advantages: the B30 has a specified route length, while the Genuss Tour focuses on individual planning. Check the latest route details before planning your ride, as they may change.
Wine and Wulka Prosciutto
Schandl's Winery grows the red wine varieties Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt in the Rosalia wine-growing region of Burgenland. These grape varieties offer a specific insight into the region’s viticulture. In Pöttelsdorf, Hans Bauer – Wein & Prosciutto also specialises in producing Wulka Prosciutto aged on the bone. The prosciutto is aged for 24 to 36 months and made from specially bred “Heidewuggerl” pigs.
Hans Bauer’s “Hofgenuss” offers tastings and smoker-cooked specialities. As the offering may change, check in advance what is currently available. This lets you plan a specific culinary experience without assuming that tastings or specialities are always available.
Choose accommodation to suit the themes you would like to explore during your stay in Pöttelsdorf.
