Prevelly offers a range of activities for a stay: surf breaks and an annual competition, public art, and trails for walking and cycling. The difference in scale between the walking options is clear: the Prevelly Sculpture Loop Walk is 3 km long; the Cape to Cape Track section from Ellensbrook to Prevelly covers 10.3 km one way and takes 3–4 hours. This lets you plan around your preferred activity and the time you have available for it.

Surfing and time on the water

Prevelly is associated with some of the world’s most consistent and spectacular surf breaks. Surfers Point has facilities for surfers and spectators. It is also the venue for the Western Australia Margaret River Pro, held every year in March and April. If you want to plan your trip around the competition, check the specific event dates in advance.

Launching boats is another option: boats can be launched from the beaches at Prevelly. So, as well as surfing and watching the competition, you can choose other water-based activities. Consider which of these will shape your time on the water.

Walking trails: a loop or a track section

The Prevelly Sculpture Loop Walk provides a point of comparison for a shorter loop: it is 3 km long. The Cape to Cape Track section from Ellensbrook to Prevelly is considerably longer. This one-way route is listed as 10.3 km and takes 3–4 hours. The two trails therefore differ in both length and format: the Sculpture Loop Walk is a loop, while the Cape to Cape section runs between two named places.

If you include the longer walk in your day’s plans, allow for both the stated walking time and the fact that it is a one-way route. The 3 km loop and the longer section are clear but distinct reference points for planning your time on foot.

Art and remembrance

The Margaret River Art Trails include Margaret River, Cowaramup and Prevelly. Along the accessible trails, locals and visitors can scan QR codes to find information about the artworks and other content about the artists and their work. This adds information about the works to a walk; the trails provide a broader context than a single art installation in Prevelly.

One specific work in the area is Layla, a sculpture by artist Russell Sheridan. It has been part of Prevelly’s rock pools since 2013. St John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Chapel, also known as the Greek Chapel, has a historical connection. As a memorial, it commemorates the actions of the people of Crete during the Second World War and the monks of Preveli Monastery, who helped Allied forces escape the Nazis. The cultural themes therefore range from outdoor art to a memorial connected with Crete and Preveli Monastery.

Cycling

A bike path along Wallcliffe Road offers a way to travel between Margaret River and Prevelly. This adds another way to plan time outdoors alongside the walking trails, without assuming a walking distance. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Prevelly, your planned activities can guide your initial comparison: a surf competition, art trails or a longer walk each make different demands on your day’s schedule.
