Walking trails with different profiles
In Yallingup, two circular walks differ in both length and route. The Wardanup Trail is 6.3 kilometres long, loops around Yallingup, passes Ngilgi Cave and Caves House, and returns to Yallingup Beach. The Torpedo Trail is 3 kilometres long: it leads to the beach, follows Yallingup Brook and climbs the hill on the return journey. At 6.3 kilometres compared with 3 kilometres, the Wardanup Trail is 3.3 kilometres longer. The routes also differ in profile: the Wardanup Trail combines a circuit with two named stops, while the Torpedo Trail is characterised by the brook, its beach destination and the climb back. Both trails have a connection to the beach, but they do not follow the same route. Local trail conditions may change on the Wardanup Trail.
The Ghost Trail is different: as a short section of the Torpedo Trail, it leads from the historic gardens of Caves House to Yallingup Beach. It should be considered a section of a trail, not a third circular walk.
Caves House and Ngilgi Cave
Caves House links trail themes with local history. From 1902 to 1968, the Caves House Group belonged to the Government of Western Australia, which developed it to provide accommodation for visitors to Yallingup Cave. Ngilgi Cave opened for candlelit tours in 1899, then under the name Yallingup Cave. The cave’s former name refers to the destination for whose visitors the accommodation was intended. The gardens of the Caves House Group are considered an exceptionally good example of an Edwardian-era terraced garden. The historic gardens are also the starting point of the Ghost Trail.
Tours and surfing
One named tour brings together the cave and local plant life: Koomal Dreaming’s “Food, Cave and Didgeridoo Tour” includes a didgeridoo performance inside Ngilgi Cave and a guided bush walk where local food and medicinal plants are identified. The program therefore features both a performance in the cave and plant identification on a walk. In the wider region, Koomal Dreaming’s immersive tours allow visitors to experience Aboriginal culture from the perspective of the Traditional Owners. The named tour offers specific activities, while the immersive tours provide a broader cultural perspective.
There are two points of reference for surfing. Rabbit Hill is close to Yallingup and is a surf area in Ngari Capes Marine Park. Surf and marine conditions there are variable. Yallingup Surf School offers surf lessons and surf guiding. Rabbit Hill refers to the surf area; the Surf School offers two forms of instruction. If you are planning water activities, take the variable conditions into account.
