The Bibbulmun Track passes through Balingup. Other trails vary in length and time required, while historical sites and events offer additional points of interest. Two questions can help with your planning: would you prefer a walk or a longer hike, and would you like to plan your stay around an event date?

Choose trails by length and time

The Birdwood Park Oaks Walk is an easy 2.2-kilometre walking trail. The Kondil Park Walk passes through Balingup and is 1.2 kilometres long; the Balingup Brook Walk is 1.5 kilometres long. This makes the Kondil Park Walk the shortest of the three, while the Birdwood Park Oaks Walk is the longest. For a longer hike, the Balingup-Grimwade Rd Walk Trail starts in Balingup: it is 13 kilometres long and takes about three hours. You can factor this approximate duration into your hiking day plans alongside the trail’s length. The interactive, two-kilometre Balingup Ghost Walk tells stories of the town’s pioneers; check in advance whether it is currently available.

Near Balingup is Golden Valley Tree Park, home to the largest arboretum in the state of Western Australia. The easy Oak Grove Walk is a 1.5-kilometre loop through the park. Also nearby is Balingup Golf Club, with a 9-hole course and sand greens. The local trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in whether you prefer a loop through the park or another walk in Balingup.

Local history and remembrance

The Balingup Heritage Display is housed in an old apple-packing shed in the town centre. The Balingup Heritage Exhibition offers insights into the town’s early history and includes static and thematic displays about working and social life. The Balingup Avenue of Honour offers another perspective: it commemorates people who lost their lives in the First World War. Their names are engraved on plaques at the foot of the trees.

These places highlight different aspects of history: a specific building in the town centre, the town’s early history and its working and social life, and remembrance of people who died in the war. Balingup also has art galleries, antique and other boutique shops, as well as numerous cafés. The Balingup Visitor Centre provides information about local attractions, events and tours.

Include events in your travel plans

Every August, the Balingup Medieval Carnivale transforms the historic village into a medieval kingdom. Telling Tales in Balingup is scheduled for the middle weekend of the Australian July school holidays. The events therefore take place at different times of the year.
