Yackandandah showcases its history in the townscape and offers a range of ways to spend time outdoors. Explore the old mining town through original bluestone gutters and elaborately designed façades dating from the 19th-century Gold Rush. For planning your day, choose between two walking trails with different distances and durations, or take a loop drive through Stanley State Forest. This gives you the option to focus on culture, walks or a forest route.

Gold Rush History in the Townscape and Museum

Yackandandah has been classified by the National Trust. The Yackandandah Museum is housed in two of the town’s oldest buildings: the Bank of Victoria, built in 1860, and the Manager's residence, dating from around 1858. The Manager's residence is therefore older than the Bank of Victoria. The collection includes photographs, pictures, objects, registers, documents, letters, textiles, digital materials and research material. This places the townscape’s historic buildings alongside a varied museum collection; each offers a different perspective on historical information.

Walking Trails: Compare Distance and Duration

The Yackandandah Gorge Scenic Walk is 3.5 km long, graded difficulty level 2, and takes 75 minutes. The Valley View Walk is a 2.8 km loop, also graded difficulty level 2, and takes 1.5 hours. Both trails therefore have the same difficulty rating, but differ in distance and stated duration: the Valley View is 0.7 km shorter, but takes 15 minutes longer than the Gorge Scenic Walk. If you choose walks according to your available time, this comparison shows why distance and duration should be considered together. The Valley View Walk follows the slope of Bushranger Hill and offers a view of Yackandandah.

Loop Drive and Mountain Bike Network

The Yackandandah Forest Drive starts and ends in the town of Yackandandah. The 14 km loop runs through Stanley State Forest and takes 30 minutes. The 14 km refers to the entire loop. Based on the stated durations, the Forest Drive is the shortest of the three options, followed by the Gorge Scenic Walk at 75 minutes and the Valley View Walk at 1.5 hours. This ranking compares the duration of the different activities.

The Yack Tracks trailhead is located in Stanley State Forest, near Yackandandah. It provides access to a purpose-built mountain bike network with more than 90 km of singletrack, including the Indigo Epic Trail. The distance describes the network as a whole, not a single route. Mountain bikers can consider this network as a separate option alongside the walking trails.
