Altona offers several distinct attractions for a stay: access to the water at Altona Beach, the history of Altona Homestead, and the shops and dining options around Pier Street. When looking for a hotel in Altona, you can first decide whether the beach, historical insights, or shopping and dining will shape your stay. The offerings range from beach mats available year-round to seasonal beach hire hours and set visiting hours at the Homestead.

Altona Beach: Beach Mats and Seasonal Hire

At Altona Beach, beach mats make it easier for people with different abilities to access the water year-round. The Hobsons Bay City Council describes Altona Beach as Australia’s first beach to offer this service. Beach wheelchair hire is a separate service: it is available free of charge on weekends during the summer months, from 12 pm to 5 pm. If a beach wheelchair is important for your visit, check current availability in advance. The year-round availability applies to the beach mats; wheelchair hire is limited to the seasonal weekend window. You can plan for the two services separately, taking their different availability into account.

Pier Street: Shopping, Dining and the Market

Pier Street is a traditional shopping street with specialty stores, unique shopping destinations, supermarkets and local offerings. More than 25 cafés and restaurants along the street offer views of Altona Beach; numbers and individual businesses may change. The street therefore combines different shopping options with dining venues overlooking the beach. The Altona Beach Market adds fresh produce, second-hand goods, local art and crafts to the mix. It can be found on Pier Street, in Weaver Reserve and in Logan Reserve; the market offerings may vary. While the shopping street also includes supermarkets and specialty stores, the market features produce and second-hand goods alongside art and crafts. This offers a different selection from a shopping visit focused mainly on the stores on Pier Street.

Altona Homestead: History and Visiting Hours

Altona Homestead was built in the mid-1840s by Alfred and Sarah Langhorne. It is open on Tuesdays from 11 am to 2 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm, and on the first Sunday of each month from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. That means three hours on Tuesday, two on Saturday and four on the first Sunday; the monthly Sunday opening is therefore the longest of the listed time windows. On the first Sunday, visitors can enjoy Devonshire tea during opening hours. If you plan to do this, confirm the relevant session and booking availability in advance. Opening hours may also change, so check them before your visit.

Planning Priorities for Your Stay

The offerings differ mainly in how they need to be planned around: the beach mats are available year-round, wheelchair hire is seasonal, and the Homestead has three specific visiting windows. Shopping and dining are the main focus on Pier Street, while market offerings may vary. If you are looking for hotels in Altona, you can start with your interests and then check the dates and times of the offerings that matter most for your stay.
