The Diamond Creek Trail is a specific point of reference when planning a trip to Wattle Glen. In Wattle Glen War Memorial Park, it runs alongside a grass sports field known as Wilson Reserve. The paved path runs off-road and is about 17.3 kilometres long. It connects Eltham, Diamond Creek, Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge. Its length and the places it connects make the trail a distinct planning consideration alongside local parks.

Parks and trails in Wattle Glen

At Peppers Paddock, the playground offers opportunities for active and imaginative play in a natural setting. This distinguishes the two parks: War Memorial Park centres on its grass sports field and trail, while Peppers Paddock focuses on play opportunities. When planning your stay, you can choose between them based on what you are looking for.

The care of Peppers Paddock is also part of the local picture: Friends of Watery Gully meets on Sundays each month to help green and care for the area. If you are considering taking part, check the current participation details on the Council event page beforehand.

Nature in the wider Nillumbik Shire destination

Beyond Wattle Glen, Nillumbik Shire offers a broader setting for nature experiences. The Shire’s towns are set between unspoilt bushland and picturesque hills. Nillumbik also has an extensive network of trails for walking, horse riding and cycling. One specifically named route is the Green Wedge Trail: it offers the opportunity to explore rural parts of Nillumbik and runs from Watery Gully Road in Wattle Glen to Clintons Road in Smiths Gully.

The Panton Hill Bushland Reserve System comprises seven community-managed bushland reserves in the Panton Hill, Smiths Gully and Watsons Creek area. Together, they cover about 140 hectares. The system offers opportunities for bushwalking, birdwatching, horse riding and mountain biking. This regional natural area differs from the Green Wedge Trail, which has two named road endpoints: here, the focus is a network of reserves with a variety of recreational opportunities.

Culture and environmental education in Nillumbik Shire

There are also different ways to explore culture across the wider destination. The Hurstbridge Heritage Trail passes 30 historically significant sites dating from early settlement to the mid-20th century. Montsalvat combines an arts centre with an artists’ community: founded in 1934, it spans twelve acres and includes more than 34 buildings. These include three galleries, 19 studios, a ceramics centre and event spaces for concerts. Its offerings also include exhibitions, studio programs and ceramics classes.

For those more interested in environmental education, Nillumbik Shire is also home to Edendale Community Environment Farm. It covers seven acres beside Diamond Creek in Eltham and provides education about sustainable living and the natural environment. The wider destination therefore offers a choice of historical sites, arts and environmental education.
