Dimboola combines cultural discoveries with trails along the Wimmera River and opportunities for water activities. The options range from collections and local history to walks and time outdoors. Which focus suits your stay depends on whether you are primarily interested in cultural topics or in scenery and activity.

Cultural Sites with Different Areas of Focus

The Dimboola Imaginarium is housed in the historic former National Bank of Australasia building. Its diverse collection includes art, curiosities, collectibles, toys, books, plants and special gifts. Its broad range makes it a different cultural destination from collections devoted to a specific subject.

The Dimboola Printing Museum displays old printing presses from across Australia; the original presses are still operational. Visitors interested in historic printing technology will find a clear focus here. Comparing it with the Imaginarium can help you choose between a diverse collection and a visit centred on printing machinery.

The Old Courthouse on Lloyd Street serves as the main archive and exhibition venue for the Dimboola and District Historical Society. Exhibitions in the courtroom cover local Koori and Chinese cultures, the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, as well as agriculture, law, railways and clothing. The subject matter therefore ranges from community history to everyday life and public institutions. Exhibitions may be updated.

A permanent exhibition is located in Nolan Studio, the garage or studio where Sidney Nolan painted. If you plan to visit this site, check visitor access in advance.

The Wimmera River and Trails

The Wimmera River Discovery Trail starts at a trailhead behind Dimboola Library. The Nine Creeks Walking and Bicycle Tracks comprise four kilometres of walking paths suitable for people with varying abilities. A boardwalk crosses the river, and there are also pedestrian bridges. Information boards along the tracks explain the area’s historical significance and its long-standing use by Indigenous, Chinese and European communities. Walking here therefore also offers insight into the history of the area. Check the current condition of the trails before setting out.

The section of the Wimmera River flowing downstream from Polkemmet Bridge through Dimboola and the district is part of the river that received Heritage status under the Heritage Rivers Act 1992. For a riverside stay, this means the landscape can also be appreciated in connection with its protected significance.

Pink Lake is six kilometres northwest of Dimboola on the Western Highway. A short path leads from the car park to the lakeshore. The clear distance and short walk provide useful guidance if you want to include a nearby day-trip destination as well as the attractions in town.

Water Activities and Practical Breaks

Horseshoe Bend Campground and Picnic Area is an eight-minute drive from Dimboola and is suitable for swimming or kayaking. Check parking conditions and access before you go. Dimboola Recreation Reserve has facilities for swimming, rowing, fishing and canoeing. There are several water activities to choose from; the availability of individual facilities may change.

Dimboola Golf Course is a sand-scrape golf course that runs along the Wimmera River. As seasonal operations may change, check availability before planning a round. Steam locomotive J539 is also on display at Dimboola Bicentennial Park. If you are visiting specifically to see the locomotive, check its current display arrangements in advance.

Dimboola Library and Community Civic Hub offers a picnic spot with landscaped gardens and lawns, seating, picnic tables and public toilets. If you are relying on specific facilities, check their current availability. This lets you tailor the balance of cultural sites, trails and a break in the park to your travel group’s interests.
