Safety Beach combines a curving beach with the Bay Trail on Port Phillip Bay. The coastline, the view from the pier and the poetry posts along the path give the town different points of interest. If you’re looking for accommodation here, you can first consider whether you’d prefer to spend your stay by the water or go for a walk.
Beach and coastal orientation
Safety Beach is 2.7 kilometres long. The beach curves around and faces west in the lee of Martha Point. From Safety Beach Pier, you can see the cliffs and look across to Arthurs Seat. The section of the Bay Trail at Safety Beach runs along the local stretch of Port Phillip Bay; Arthurs Seat lies to the south and Mount Martha to the north. The pier therefore offers a specific viewpoint, while the two landmarks place this stretch of the trail in a north–south orientation.
Bay Trail and poetry posts
The section of the Bay Trail at Safety Beach runs along the foreshore reserve and has little tree cover. The path from Safety Beach to Dromana begins at the Martha Cove Underpass and heads south past the Safety Beach Sailing Club. The last poetry post on the Safety Beach Bay Trail stands north of the underpass, at the start of the cliff path from Tassells Beach to Pebble Beach. These directions help distinguish the stretch heading south to Dromana from the location of the last poetry post.
On the Safety Beach Bay Trail, walkers can read the eleven rhymes on the poetry posts in sequence; the posts are spaced 200 to 300 metres apart. These distances spread the texts across several stops, making it possible to combine reading and walking along the path. So, if you choose this route, you’ll find not only coastal scenery but also a series of rhymes to discover in sequence as you go.
Water and facilities
Stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing are popular in the clear waters of the calm bay at Safety Beach. As water conditions can vary, check them locally before planning around either activity. Safety Beach also has a boat and jet ski launching ramp, parking for boat trailers and a jetty. Paddling and canoeing offer a different way to experience the bay than walking along the shore or on the Bay Trail.
Beach essentials
There is parking near Safety Beach Pier, including spaces for boat trailers. Along the beach are three separate toilet blocks, as well as picnic tables and a playground. The beach therefore has a range of facilities for visitors, while the pier also serves as a viewpoint and landmark. If you’re planning to use the boat ramp or other facilities, check their current conditions locally.
