Around Glenalbyn, rocky views, walking trails, wildlife and seasonal blooms come together for a range of nature experiences. At Melville Caves, scenic views, history and various activities are close at hand; Glenalbyn Camping Area is a base for self-sufficient campers exploring Kooyoora State Park. Three tracks also offer a clear choice of distance and duration.
Melville Caves: Views and Wildlife Watching
Melville Caves are named after the robber and rogue “Captain Melville”. Large rock outcrops offer beautiful views, and the caves also have a rich history. The lookout is ideal for stargazing and birdwatching, bushwalking and photography. This destination brings together scenic impressions, historical connections and several nature-based activities.
Choose a Walking Track to Suit Your Schedule
The three tracks in the area vary considerably in distance and time required. The Kangderaar Link Track is 850 m long and takes 30 minutes. The Fred Watts Loop Walking Track is listed as 3.2 km and 1.5 hours. The Long Rock Walking Track is 5.3 km long and takes 2 to 3 hours. Kangderaar is the shortest option by both distance and time. Long Rock covers the greatest distance and requires the most time, while Fred Watts falls between the two. This lets you choose between a short walk and a longer block of time.
Wildlife and Seasons at the Camping Area
There is abundant wildlife in the Glenalbyn Camping Area, particularly birds. A small dam beside the camping area provides water for birds and other animals. Birdwatching is therefore a shared feature of the area: it is one of the activities available at Melville Caves, and part of the especially bird-rich wildlife at the camping area.
Flowering also changes throughout the year. Golden-yellow wattles bloom at Glenalbyn Camping Area in late winter, followed by wildflowers in spring. This sequence provides a seasonal guide for a nature outing, though the timing and extent of flowering vary from year to year.
Facilities, Access and Prospecting
Glenalbyn Camping Area has several wood-fired barbecues and picnic tables, but no toilets. If you plan to stay there, take these facilities into account when preparing. Access is via a sealed gravel road suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles. As road conditions can change, check current park updates before travelling.
Prospecting is permitted in certain areas of Glenalbyn Camping Area; prospectors need a valid mining licence. Permitted areas and rules may change. Before prospecting, check the latest maps and information from Parks Victoria.
