Gipsy Point is a peninsula that extends into the upper lake of Mallacoota Inlet. It lies upstream from Mallacoota and is surrounded by lakes, rivers and Croajingolong National Park. Water, bushland and wildlife watching shape different aspects of a stay. If you’re looking for accommodation, you could consider whether boating, park walks or wildlife by the lake should be the focus.
Waterways and getting around
Two relationships are important for navigating the waterways: Gipsy Point lies upstream from Mallacoota and about 1 km downstream from the confluence of the Wallagaraugh River and the Genoa River. Mallacoota Inlet can be navigated from Mallacoota to Gipsy Point. There is a boat ramp in town for launching boats. With support from Gipsy Point Lodge, visitors can hire a boat to explore the inlet; a canoe can be paddled up the Genoa River to Gipsy Point. Boat hire and canoeing offer different ways to experience the water: boat hire is for exploring the inlet, while canoeing follows the Genoa River upstream to town. Weather, water levels and local advice can affect navigability. Check these conditions before setting out, and also find out about the condition of the ramp in advance.
Mallacoota Inlet is also known for its abundant black bream and dusky flathead. For visitors interested in the waterway, this fish life adds another dimension to a trip on the inlet.
Walks and wildlife watching
The Point Tip Walk is an easy bushland track in the heart of Croajingolong National Park near Gipsy Point. It offers a specific option on foot, with a different focus from activities on the water.
A walking track leads from Gipsy Point into Croajingolong National Park. There, visitors can spot parrots, whistlers, fantails, thornbills, sea eagles and various seabirds. The bird species seen during a visit may vary.
The wildlife around Gipsy Point is also varied: the area is home to a large mob of kangaroos. Goannas and colourful Gippsland water dragons are often seen along the lake at Gipsy Point. When watching wildlife, it’s not possible to know in advance which species you may see.
Accommodation and seasonal offerings
Gipsy Point Lodge is a specific point of reference when planning accommodation: its licensed restaurant is available on selected days, and the lodge offers Hobie kayak or canoe hire in summer. The offerings have different timeframes—selected days for the restaurant and summer for hire. If you’re planning to eat there, check the restaurant details in advance; for rentals, keep the summer season in mind.
