Buninyong can be explored through a range of interests: botanical themes at the Buninyong Botanic Gardens, historical traces in the town, and trails through bushland. When planning, it helps to distinguish the walks by their individual character and the stated time required. This lets you include cultural and nature experiences in your stay to suit your interests.

Gardens and History in Buninyong

The Buninyong Botanic Gardens were established in the 1860s and are listed with Heritage Victoria. Self-guided tours explore the gardens from historical, educational and botanical perspectives; seasonal tours are also available. The themes offer different approaches to a visit: you can take an interest in botany, focus on the history of the gardens, or choose a seasonal perspective. The gardens thus bring together several themes, without the tours being described as a guided program.

Buninyong’s buildings also provide a historical setting for a stay. The town has 19th-century buildings, including some from the early Gold Rush period. In early 2013, the Buninyong & District Historical Society and the Buninyong & District Community Association installed a series of plaques on historic buildings in Buninyong to explain their historical significance. Together with the history of the Botanic Gardens, this offers another way to explore the town’s past: through a landscaped garden on the one hand, and the history of individual buildings on the other.

Park Trails and Longer Walks

In Desoza Park, a flat gravel path runs along both sides of Union Jack Creek. It forms an easy loop and is suitable for prams, wheelchairs and bicycles. This loop stands out for its specifically described surface, its route along the creek and the listed ways it can be used. The loop in De Soza Park is 3.7 kilometres long. The estimated walking time is about 1 hour and 10 minutes; it is classified as Grade 1. Trail conditions may change; check them before your visit.

The 72-hectare Union Jack Reserve is a bushland area on the northeast side of Buninyong. There are two signposted, self-guided walks there. The longer walk includes the Locomotive Mine, which distinguishes it from the other loop. If you value a historical connection when choosing a walk, this is a specific point to consider.

The Mt Buninyong Circuit offers another option for planning your time: it is 11.5 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. The route starts and ends in Buninyong. Compared with the 3.7-kilometre loop in De Soza Park, the circuit is the longer option in terms of distance and estimated duration. The loop in De Soza Park is classified as Grade 1.

The Buninyong Walk is part of the Wallaby Track section of the Goldfields Track. It starts at the eastern end of The Gong and continues to the summit of Mt Buninyong. These details describe the starting point, destination and place within the long-distance trail network; they give you a different way to orient yourself than the distance and time details for the Mt Buninyong Circuit.
