450 hectares of skiable terrain, 90 downhill runs and a free cross-country trail network define Falls Creek; at the same time, options range from the nearby Heritage Trail to a three-day alpine hike. If you’re looking for a hotel, first consider whether your stay will be shaped by winter sports, longer hikes, or shorter outings and culture.
Downhill skiing and cross-country skiing
Falls Creek’s ski resort has 450 hectares of skiable terrain with 90 downhill runs accessible by 15 lifts. Beginners can find beginner-friendly areas at Drovers and on Wombats Ramble. At 2.2 kilometres, Wombats Ramble is considered Australia’s longest green run.
The free cross-country trail network starts at Nordic Bowl and extends into the Bogong High Plains. At the Falls Creek Cross Country Centre, you can rent cross-country skiing equipment for all ages; other accessories are also available there. This gives you a choice between lift-served downhill runs and cross-country skiing. Ski resort operating conditions can vary by season; check current conditions before your visit.
Hiking: from a nearby trail to a multi-day trek
The nearby Wallaces Heritage Trail is 6.5 kilometres long, takes about 2.5 hours and starts at the Wallace Hut car park. Also nearby, Wallace’s Hut is the oldest surviving cattlemen’s hut. The three Wallace brothers, Arthur, William and Stewart, built it in 1889.
For a much longer hike, the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing covers 37 kilometres over three days through Alpine National Park, from Falls Creek to Mt Hotham. The difference in duration compared with the approximately two-and-a-half-hour Heritage Trail is an important part of planning: one can be treated as a shorter hiking experience, while the other shapes the length of your trip over several days. Check conditions and access to the Crossing route before setting out.
Mountain biking, kayaking and scenery
Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park has 50 kilometres of gravity trails in alpine terrain high in Victorian Alpine National Park. The trails start and finish at the resort. Seasonal conditions or closures may apply to individual trails; check conditions before your ride.
Kayaking is a popular form of water recreation in Falls Creek, with opportunities to explore more remote shores and shorelines. Water conditions and services are seasonal. At 1,600 metres, Rocky Valley Lake is Australia’s highest significant body of water.
Museum and short walk
The Falls Creek Museum tells the story of Falls Creek through exhibits and audiovisual presentations. Visitor access may vary; check before your visit. Scenic waterfalls are just a short, easy walk from the village entrance.
Plan a stay that suits you
Consider whether a multi-day trek should shape your stay, or whether shorter experiences will define your daily plans. This decision can help you tailor your hotel search to the length of trip you want.
