Sea Lake combines murals along the main street with striking silo art and nearby destinations in the landscape, Lake Tyrrell and Green Lake. Art and visitor information are available in town, while each of the two lakes offers its own focus for nature and recreation. Lake Tyrrell is 7 km north of Sea Lake, and Green Lake is 10 km away on the Sea Lake-Birchip Road. When looking for a hotel, you can decide whether to focus mainly on local art or nearby landscapes.
Silo Art and Mallee Motifs
Sea Lake Silo Art is part of the Wimmera Mallee Silo Art Trail. The artwork depicts a young girl swinging from a Mallee eucalyptus tree and looking out over Lake Tyrrell. Murals along Sea Lake’s main street depict local flora and scenes of Mallee life. You’ll encounter a range of artistic motifs: the silo artwork depicts a single figure looking out over the lake, while the murals feature the local plant life and life in the Mallee. So if you’re interested in local art, you’ll find more than one form of artistic expression here.
Lake Tyrrell: Views and Guided Tour
The reflective surface of shallow, ancient Lake Tyrrell offers particularly impressive views at sunrise and sunset. The lake is 7 km north of Sea Lake. A Lake Tyrrell Sunset Tour offers a guided visit with a local operator. Tour availability and operator details may change; check them before planning. This gives you two different ways to include the lake in your stay: enjoying views of its reflective surface or taking a guided visit.
Information and Galleries in Sea Lake
The Sea Lake Visitor Information Hub provides information about travelling through the Wimmera Mallee, sells local products and houses an Indigenous art gallery. You can also book a tour to Lake Tyrrell there. As tour bookings may not always be available, it’s best to check before your trip. Another cultural stop is the Skymirror Gallery, which opened in March 2018 and displays works ranging from traditional landscape photography to fine art. The two gallery offerings therefore have different focuses: Indigenous art at the Hub, and a spectrum from landscape photography to fine art at the Skymirror Gallery.
Golf and Swimming Pool
Sea Lake Golf Club has a 9-hole sand-scrape course, open from April to October. Check seasonal opening before your trip. Sea Lake Swimming Pool caters to residents of all ages, offering recreational activities such as swimming, water sports and exercise, as well as water education opportunities. The pool’s intended audience is therefore explicitly stated and differs from the art and landscape attractions described above.
Green Lake and Its Surroundings
Green Lake is 10 km away on the Sea Lake-Birchip Road. It has sandy beaches, powered sites, showers, and numerous picnic and barbecue areas. For walks, head to the bushland around the lakebed and the adjoining Mallee and Pine-Buloke forest reserve. Green Lake combines walking opportunities with places to picnic and barbecue. By contrast, the focus at Lake Tyrrell is on its reflective surface and the views at sunrise or sunset. The two nearby lakes thus offer different nature and recreation experiences to consider when planning your stay.
